North Wilmington (the New Castle County part along the US-202 corridor between I-95 and DE-52) is a good central place to get a feel for the area. It is also convenient to shopping for errands and major highways for getting anywhere. Schools north of the border in PA (Garnet Valley and Chadds Ford-Unionville school districts) are supposed to be excellent but it will cost you more to live there and have slightly longer commutes if you work in or towards downtown Wilmington.
