Hi,
I recently brought my dog up from Sussex county and I live in an apartment so that does not give my black lab mix any opportunities to run around/play.

Does anyone know of any dog parks or playgrounds in the Newark or Wilmington area that I could bring my dog to so she can run around?

Thanks,
Kristin

In Newark, there is Iron Hill County park that has a dog park section - just drive in the park to the end and park - it is along the trail about 100-150 yards. There is a big dog and little dog section.

Also, in Middletown (just past the Walmart to the left) there is a dog park with MUCH more run around room. There are two sections there as well. I just find it to not have as much exposure so there isn't usually a lot of dogs there to socialize...plus, the big space makes it so that you have to walk far if your dog decides to go all the way on the other side!

Another option is a dog day-care...we use Camp Bow-Wow on Ruthar dr. They have $20 Saturdays - from 7:30 to 6 PM...makes it nice to get the dog socialization while you can do things around the house (like vacuum without freaking out the dog)

Lums Pond has a dog beach off of Howell School Road at the end of Buck Jersey Road . It is off-leash, has trails, and swimming for your lab mix. I haven't been there since our Simon died, but I do expect to take Darcy there this spring. Usually a very nice group of people and a good opportunity for your dog to play with others.

Phyldude, if you are asking if the dog beach is fenced, it is not. When you go into the parking lot, there is a path about 1/4 mile to where the beach starts. Most people have their dogs leashed until they get to the water. Usually there are so many dogs, pets want to stay in the area. The trails go on for quite a while and dogs do get tired at some point, so fencing has never been an issue that I can remember.

Regarding Iron Hill Dog park. Be careful, there are agressive Huskies that go there. If you try to talk to them about it, they defend their dogs by saying "Its the nature of the breed". Amazing that the Husky owners are so quick to defend. Being an owner of a beautiful Husky, I am very familiar with the breed. The behavior that the group of Huskies display is very agressive and not typical of the breed. You sound like an owner who is not only in denial... but who probably enjoys the "bullying" that goes on. If you were any kind of responsible owner, you would do as the park rules state, and leash your dog and leave when the dog gets agressive towards others. From my understanding, there are several of the Husky owners who are "Friends of Iron Hill Park" which explains why no one acts on the complaints that are all over the internet, giving the park a bad name and now stating misinformation about Huskies. Your Husky does not in any way... represent the typical behavior of a well trained Husky. Your dog has been raised to be that way, they are not an agressive breed. Just be careful if you go there with your dog.
