Your dentist is the only one who can tell you that. Didn't they tell you to come back on a certain date? It depends on your tooth.

I have a temp crown also. It was a problem tooth, and the doctor said he was going to wait two weeks to give the tooth and gums time to heal. I am going back this week to get the permanent.

I went almost 20 years on a tooth that had a root canal, before I got a crown. And even then it did not crack, it just had bad margins with the next tooth. (molar)

Another tooth I had a root canal on has never had a crown, probably about the same length of time. (Canine)

I'd get the permanent crown put on as soon as it is ready.

A temporary crown is stuck on there with temporary cement and can fall off at any time, especially if you try to floss around it, or if you eat something sticky. A temporary crown is not made to perfectly fit the tooth at the gum line and will likely leak, cause gum irritation, and allow bacteria to get underneath it. A temporary crown is called temporary for a reason. Keeping it for a long period of time is like wearing cardboard shoes and hoping it doesn't rain.

You can wait until the day before the temporary crown breaks.
