A crown doesn't ruin a tooth; a crown saves the tooth. Far better to get a crown while there's time than end up with an extraction.
I have three or four crowns, all from large fillings (that I got as a teen) that eventually caused part of my tooth to crack and fall off. I've had no problem with them. What I want to avoid is the extractions and implants that my in-laws are dealing with.
I'm heading to 78 and have plenty of crowns. A couple are about 40 yrs in my mouth..I remember that dentist who did them and he was one good great dentist.
Now, I do all I can to prevent dental work and avoid implants etc...including cutting WAY BACK on sugars/carbs, sodas -- you name it....take care of the mouth and teeth.
Like stated, crowns are both necessary and save teeth.
