Another person looking to leave MASS!

I have about 10k in savings and can collect unemployment from MA starting soon(to keep a source of income while I decide where to station myself in life.)I am single and know 1 person that just moved to Denver, but I dont know that person very well so perhaps asking her to stay at her place would be weird.

The only concern I have is inital living quarters and finding work.

I can spring up to 600$ for a place monthly while Im collecting.

Can someone give me advice?

thanks

You should be able to find plenty of places that rent for $600 or less, but don't expect a lot of amenities/frills.

You and your acquaintance are both in the same boat, moving to Denver from Boston now. So I think you've possibly talked over the phone socially about your planned moves. Now, I wouldn't ask her directly to be her roommate. But, if you mention in conversation that you are looking around at apartments, you are not being rude. You are reporting a material fact that is central to your efforts in moving to Denver. If she happens to want a roommate to cut costs, I believe she'll respond to your report by saying, "Oh really ? Well, I'm thinking I'd kind of like a roommate so I didn't have to pay as much rent".

Finding a job is going to be trickier than finding a place for $600 or less, but at least you have savings and income for now, which is more than some can say. So I think you are in good shape for making a move like this.

One thought I have is maybe prior to making this move, you could try applying for jobs in numerous places around the country where you might like to live. Texas has a low unemployment rate, for example. So maybe if you cast a wider net, you have a better chance of landing a job rather than picking one place to live, and finding a job only there once moving there. Who knows ? Maybe you'll land some job in some little old town somewhere you've never thought of moving, and you'll find it's a great place to live. I found that out when I landed a job in State College, PA which I'd never heard of before. I'd heard of Penn State, but not of the town State College.

Good luck with your move and your employment search.

That's the question. And the other is whether Denver is the best place in the country to break into that field. In my industry, the best thing you can do as a hopeful entry level employee is to be willing to live anywhere in the country. In my industry, once you're established, you have a better chance of transferring to your preferred region in the country a few years down the line than you would have had applying for an entry level job there.

thanks for the reply. Obviously it's a tough decision for me but I have the itch to get up and go. I've tried a pros and cons list for leaving or staying but I can't make a decision from that just yet. There's just something appealing to me about Colorado.
