Yes CET just did a good documentary a few months ago about the Hanson family who settled way up high in what is now East Vail. It was pretty good.

There are a lot of things you can do over the weekends and this actually would depend on your mood. You can go hiking, climb the rock in Castle Rock, go and visit Daniels Park. If you want something educational, you can visit a lot of museums located nearby Denver area, you can also explore botanical gardens. There are also a lot of events that you can join and witness.

Truth be told, most weekend trips are to the mountains.

My list off the top of my head:

Winters: Most weekend trips are ski trips; Breckenridge, Vail, Copper, Keystone, Steamboat. I rarely do day trips skiing (unless I take a weekday off) so I do Friday or Saturday to Monday night with friends or when family visiting. Get a condo, ski a few days and have a mini-vaca rather than a day trip full of driving and lift lines.

Summer:
Breckenridge: (base for hiking/biking and cheap lodging). Buena Vista or Glenwood Springs (base for rafting). Roaring Fork Valley. (stay anywhere from Aspen to Glenwood).

Longer trips (3-4 days) I do Moab, Santa Fe, Northern NM (Eagle's Nest, Taos), Durango, San Luis Valley. Did a long weekend in Palisade a few years back.

For camping: Medicine Bow (between Cheyenne/Laramie), Guanella Pass, Poudre Canyon, some spots near Walden and north/central CO.
