Going with my son and a buddy to Grays & Torreys. Hoping there's not a lot of snow on the higher slopes. Sounds like the Great September Blizzard of 2014 missed both peaks.

Thanks! We're gonna be layered up good and will hit the trailhead between 7 and 8. Hoping for dry conditions because none of us have winter gear.

Good news/bad news. The trail is clear. Had to abort at about 13,000' because of vertigo. Need to work on my conditioning considerably before attempting another 14er.

Sorry to hear it. Do you think it was altitude sickness? I have alot of trouble at altitude. I'm trying some pills to see if they help. Just got them yesterday so no personal experience. But hoping to test them soon.

Sorry to hear that. Was it altitude sickness or lack of conditioning? The reason I ask is they are very unrelated. I did a training on altitude sickness and one of the takeaways I got from the doctor was that the best trained athletes in the world experience altitude sickness at a slightly higher rate than normal folks. Being in good shape does not help.

If you want to perform better at altitude, you need to spend more time at altitude. There are lots of hikes that terminate at 11,000 and 12,000 feet on the front range. Spend some time doing these and you will help build up your tolerance for altitude.

Mt. Flora is a relatively simple 13er for training and not too far away(Berthoud Pass). Do that a couple of times and you should be good to go for Grays and Torreys.

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking on the thread. Any idea what conditions on bierstadt are like in late September? I was going to wait until I moved in October, but it'll be late October and I'm thinking it may be more than I want to tackle but I'll be there for a few days in late September. I've had some basic mountaineering courses, but I haven't taken an AVY class yet so I don't really feel comfortable if there will already be a ton of snow and ice.

You will be fine. It very well could snow and be quite cold/windy on the trail but the snow doesn't begin accumulating until later in the year.
