I wrote this brief summary about Aurora, Colorado and thought it might be useful in this forum...

Aurora, Colorado is a suburban community located just east of Denver in the high plains of Colorado. Besides your typical benefits and services (housing, shopping, transportation), Aurora has a few things that might surprise you.

Lets start with some history: Aurora was founded in 1891 and is now home to an estimated 2006 population of 306,908 residents making it the 3rd largest city in Colorado and the 56th largest city in the United States! The overall size of the city encompasses over 151 square miles at an elevation of 5,471 feet.

Originally home to a large number of military service operations, Aurora's economy is now diversified to include medical services, technology, shopping and other civic functions. With easy access to the entire Denver metro area, Aurora offers convenience, value, and recreation to its many residents and visitors.

Now, why should you look at Aurora? In my opinion, here are the key factors to look at in Aurora:

Convenience

Located just east of Denver, Aurora offers convenient access to the entire city, Denver International Airport, shopping and services, all connected by three major highways and light rail transit. (map)

Diverse Economy

Aurora is home to a vibrant business environment, including major industries such as aerospace, military, high-tech, biotechnology and health care, distribution and manufacturing. Specifically, Aurora is home to Buckley Air Force Base and the Anschutz Medical Campus including the University of Colorado Hospital, The Children's Hospital, and much more.

Affordable Housing

From affordable urban living, comfortable suburban neighborhoods, to high-end amenities, Aurora offers housing options to meet your needs. Parks and open space intertwine the entire city offering residents easy access to recreational activities.

Award Winning Schools

The Cherry Creek School District is one of the top performing school districts in Colorado and Aurora Public Schools is undergoing a massive refurbishment thanks to a recent bond approval.

Cultural and Recreational Activities

From arts centers, libraries, and theaters to nature centers, recreation facilities and reservoirs, Aurora has something for everyone! My favorite outing is to visit the Morrison Nature Center where they offer easy access to trails, wildlife classes, and other outdoor activities.

Overall, Aurora should be on your radar when you are looking at the Denver metro area.

Aurora's a complete mixed bag. It's one of the largest suburbs, if not the largest, and there are huge variances with respect to schools, crime, housing quality, housing price, and pretty much any other factor you could name. I would avoid painting Aurora with a broad brush. It's better to focus on specific subsections of the city. If you're talking SE Aurora, there are certainly some great parts. There are some more northern parts that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
