This is what I did when I lived there:
Close by:
Walk, bike ride
Enjoyed the many public parks
Museum of Nature and Science
Art Museum
Movies
Theater (DCPA)
Concerts: (favorites were Botanic Gardens, but they have become pricey)
Further away: concerts at Red Rocks--the best!, after that, anything else, such as the Paramount--stadium shows were my least favorite)
The mountains..nice hikes in the foothills, but the real 'mountains' have become increasingly difficult to get to, and increasingly expensive once you get there.
If you are younger and into that scene, there is a wealth of after-dark opportunities in terms of live theater, arts. The west side of downtown Denver has a cool theater thing going on there. And there are lots of bars and stuff all over town, and accompanying live music. Check out Westword.

Been to the Pepsi Center for the Ringling Bros. Circus. NBA Denver Nuggets and NHL Avalanche play there along with various concerts.
Different Trade Shows go on at the Convention Center during the year. We have gone to the Denver Boat Show there in January.
There is also Denver Livestock Show & Rodeo in January (been to this also).
Seen the New York City Rockette's at the Buelle Theater downtown for a Christmas show......many great shows at that theater.
There is the Parade of Lights (Christmas parade) in December. Been to this also.
We own a fishing/ski boat, so, during the summer months we spend almost every weekend morning on Chatfield or Cherry Creek Lakes.
Depending on what you are looking for, Denver "can be" a great place for entertainment. But, just remember, Denver is not Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City. Young single adults,in their 20's, may see Denver as extremely boring when it comes to entertainment.

there is a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do in this area:
mountain biking
road biking
hiking
skiing
fishing
golf

however, watersports do not really exist here if you are into that as there are no large bodies of water. there is chatfield reservoir, which is basically a small pond that everyone crams their boats into en masse on the weekends.
