Worse than the story itself is the fact that an Emmy Award winning journalist wrote;

"There is a large whole in the front of the house, broken windows and glass are littered everywhere and shrapnel is stuck in the walls."

The house is not too far from where I live, so I drove by to look at it. It is boarded up now so I could not see inside. I am not believing from what I saw from the pictures and my driveby that this house needs to be torn down, I think the owner is just posturing. I have remodeled condemed/uninhabitable houses before, I would estimate $60,000 in repairs. The roof and foundation seem fine. I am assuming modest water and fire damage. That said it is crazy that the GWV police caused that much damage to the house. Surely similiar sitatuons of an armed gun man alone in a house have been resolved thousands of times without this kind of damage to the house. Did they not have tear gas, concussive granades and armoured suits? Why even have a SWAT team if they are unable subdue one meth addict with a hand gun?

The thief made a mistake running to GWV, he should have stayed in Denver, DPD would have declared it a civil matter and walked away.

Wouldn't tear gas drive the perp out of the house? Something like that?

Tearing the house apart while using explosives seems inappropriate on a shoplifter.

Make no mistake, the suspect is no misguided youth. He's a thirty-something career criminal with a long rap sheet, but he was also cornered with no hostages (the nine-year-old escaped early on) and no way out. The GVPD Commander's comments, which I quoted in an earlier post, are a disgusting attempt to deflect scrutiny from the department's highly-questionable choice to use military tactics by portraying those of us appalled by what transpired as blood-thirsty heathens.

Quote:
"...if anybody is going to sit there and say that young man's life, even though he's a suspect isn't worth as much as the property, they need to take a look up and rethink really who they are.
Excuse me? Stop talking, Commander Varney. Seriously, just shut up.

Looking at the house on the news this morning, I had a vision of the Christmas Vacation movie at the end when the SWAT team crashed through all the windows simultaneously

Local media reports that Greenwood Village is paying the deductibles for all homeowners, including neighbors, whose property was damaged during the siege. The renter's temporary housing while the property is re-built is also being covered.

the coverage of deductables still hits the owners due to a claim being recorded, resulting in higher rates over time...

pretty poor form IMO

Eh, we're all looking at higher homeowner's insurance due to the plague of hail the Front Range has been dealing with in the past couple of years. I've paid for my roof to be replaced twice in five years! I'm just glad GV is doing something to compensate the homeowner and his neighbors for their losses.
