Hi, some background:

I'm expecting a job offer in Denver sometime this week. My place of employment would be near Speer and Logan. I'm kind of fed up with the costs associated with owning a vehicle as well as parking issues. I'm dropping 1k on new brakes and two tires at the very moment I type this post. I haven't found a place to live yet as nothing has been settled but Speer, Baker, Washington Park West, Governors Park, and Capitol Hill are on the radar. I'd like to not be limited regarding apartment options due to owning a car and needing a space.

a. Is being carless in Denver a viable option?
b. Do these neighborhoods offer adequate public transportation possibilities to my potential place of employment and other amenities?
c. Do you miss having a vehicle if you are without one?

And while I'm here...

Any suggestions on those neighborhoods? I'd like to spend around $1,100-1,400 in rent. A studio works. A gym would be nice. Location and having a newer place trumps space for me. Being able to walk to work and grocery stores would be the ideal situation.

A little more personal background for neighborhood/lifestyle purposes: I'm in my mid 30s, single, no pets, enjoy music and art, museums, festivals, fitness, independent restaurants. Not interested in partying/drinking.

I appreciate your time. Thank you.

If you don't plan on going to the mountains much and you are going to live in the metro area, I'd say that being carless in Denver is a viable option. Between public transit, Uber/Lyft, and other car sharing services, there are ample options in the urban core.

Living near public transit is the best option IMO. That way you have an affordable transit option available to you at all times. When you're in a pinch, you can request an Uber/Lyft.

you can pretty much be carless anywhere depending on your lifestyle. But, the public transportation here is for the birds, so I would plan on having something if you want to enjoy Denver and the surrounding area. If you are going to stay in the metro the whole time get a scooter or a bike to pedal around.

Go to Index of Key Threads and look up one called "Car Free in Denver" as it can be done.

I might even merge this thread into it so we can keep all this info in one info-dense thread.

I know people who use "Car 2 Go" around my neighborhood. I would get a car even if it's an old Jeep or something.

To be honest, there's little point of moving to CO if you aren't going to have a car. Downtown isn't anything special (for a major metro city), and if you're not an outdoorsy person, you're paying a LOT for living here without really reaping any of the benefits.

It definitely can be done, but you need to pick where you live very carefully and love to ride a bicycle.

And also have no desire to ever leave the city, or at least the RTD. I mean, you can take the RTD to the airport, but you can't really get to the mountains w/o a car. The only ski area accessible to RTD is Eldora.

The Winter Park Ski Train is also an option, but it's infrequent.
