So Hurricane Michael has destroyed my place of employment and in general the entirety of Bay county, so we will need to relocate. We have visited CO and Denver several times and really enjoyed the outdoor living aspect of the area, but what solidified the move was that we are able to get great jobs in Denver. Both my wife and I are Florida babies, while we have vacationed in snow it is a different reality than living in snow. Also because this hurricane is stupid for forming so late, we will be making this move in the middle of winter as we have to sell our house before the mortgage picks up in Feb. So I am asking what are other things that we should know about Denver and the general area for Sunshine State natives moving there? Thanks for any responses.

Welcome to City Data!

Well, to start with, read the *stickies* at the top of the thread page, one by 2bnDenver and the other by Mike From Back East, who mods the state and city forums. A lot of good information there.

I'm sorry you are in this mess, but y'all sound like strong people who can make it work. Don't worry about the snow. You will quickly learn how to drive in it, we have plenty of plows, and it doesn't last that long anyway. You might need to ditch the flip flops a months of the year...

You are talking to the girl who wore flip flops in snow in Alaska. You can try to pry my flip flops off my corpse, you ain't getting it sooner.

I did read the stickie at the top of the page, but I guess I was asking about if there was any idiosyncrasies that were not otherwise stated in the sticky.

Eh. I wear flip flops year round.

Make sure you have good tires in the winter.

Idiosyncrasies: people really like talking about their outdoors adventures. That bothers some people

Any specific questions you have? Neighborhoods, etc?

There have been some threads here by people wanting to move to Denver from Florida. Maybe you could find those?

Did you see these threads in the Sticky "Official Index - Key Threads"?
Opinions
- Is Denver a Great City?
- Urban living in Denver
- Give us some best kept secrets of denver...
- Back from Denver
- Thoughts after 2 months living here
- Denver Impressions - Day 2
- Can it really be 6 months already? My thoughts about Denver!
- Observations from a Newbie
- Newcomer's Perspective...5 months in
- 5 top pros and cons
- http://www.city-data.com/forum/denve...er-denver.html
- Should I give Denver some serious consideration?
- Am I crazy...leaving all my friends behind to move to Denver?
- So far from an ocean
- Questions for Denver natives (and LONG time residents)
- Is Denver boring?
- The People
- How easy/hard is it to make friends?

I guess for me the biggest thing to know is how dry Denver is compared to Florida. And you have to get used to the altitude and the lack of bugs.

I read these, I guess with some of these threads being over 10 years old I wonder how relevant the info in them still is. Some things never change but things also constantly change at the same time.

And oh no, less bugs. The worst. I loved all the bugs Lol. I am excited to get out of this bug infested muggy mess. I never spent any time outside between April through October due to it being so hot and gross outside. Walking from my car to the inside of my work I would begin to sweat due to hot humid it was and kept a stick of deoderant in my work locker; I am not morbidly obese or anything to warrant that either.

Here are some off the top of my head.

- Denver is very midwestern. People who have been here awhile tend to be quiet and not outwardly friendly. They're not rude. More standoffish until they get to know you. The South is in your face friendly.

- Schools are hit or miss. There are some good ones and there are some that are bad. There isn't a strong desire to fund public education at the state level.

- Get some chapstick. You're gonna need it.

- Sunblock is more important here than in the panhandle.

- Most people don't ski.

- Denverites drive so slow. In the left lane.

- People love to tell you they're a "native". This just means they were born here and has nothing to do with Native Americans. Denver is changing so fast that the families that have been here for generations are feeling it.

- They don't understand the importance of college football.

It may have been mentioned in one of the stickies, but be sure to "winterize" your vehicle before leaving FL. Mainly 50% antifreeze and 50% water in engine coolant . Also windshield washer fluid antifreeze . Also multi-weight engine oil as recommended by maker.

Except for the dryness, you will love it in CO. Co-worker who came from Ft Lauderdale bought Chapstick by the case, and never got used to dry bedsheets ;-) (get flannel sheets if "too dry" bothers you)
