My family and I are looking to go camping not too far from Denver. We live on the southwest end of Lakewood near 285 if that helps. We'd like to go camping, dispersed-style, somewhere quiet and pretty, with maybe a nice lake or stream nearby. Any recommendations? We camp with a tent from our car.

Quiet and dispersed near Denver? Over 20 years ago, maybe. Today-nowhere really. You might have better luck right here in town at Cherry Creek State Park. Make reservations early, however.

Have you been up to Grand County? The Stillwater Pass area is National Forest and has vehicle accessible dispersed campsites. Lots of beetle kill, but the mountains are still there, and the 3 Lakes area is close by. Another possibility is the Church Park area west of Fraser. You can get info by contacting the Sulphur Ranger District office in Granby 970-887-4100. Both these areas are within a 2 hour drive from your location.
