Can you give any recommendations for a scenic drive...
that would be no more than say, 3.5-4 hours round trip from Denver?
We are flying in this weekend for a 4-day househunting trip. Our son has autism, and we are considering having my husband take him out for a drive for the day (well, more like the afternoon) instead of going with my daughter and I to look at homes with our Realtor. My DH is a big outdoorsman kind of guy, and I thought he'd enjoy going up to the Estes Park area...isn't that where the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance is? I was thinking he could take my son there for a little while. Would that be feasible time-wise? And, should we already be concerned about snow on the ground up there, etc. this time of year? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Brainard Lake is a great place, it's kind of small but the scenery is beautiful coming and going. Closer then Estes park being nearer to Boulder.
USDA Forest Service, Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests, Pawnee National Grassland - Recreation Activities - Boulder Ranger District, Brainard Lake Recreation Area
Rocky Mountain National Park is great, much larger but farther. Definitely a day trip more then 4 hours.

Drive time from downtown Denver to downtown Estes Park is at least 1.5 hour each way. Just enough time for your husband to drive through town and turn around! Good news is that there won't be snow on the ground this weekend.
He could drive up 285 to Kenosha Pass and stop at the Coney Island hot dog stand just west of Bailey. Your son would enjoy that -- the restaurant is a giant hot dog.

Thanks for the suggestions! My son would definitely enjoy a hot dog stand that looks like a giant hot dog!

Okay, sorry to bring up such an old thread, but I'm trying to figure out exactly where this would be. We want to take a day trip this coming weekend, and I know my son would love this hot dog place!

Never mind! I just located Bailey, CO on Mapquest, so I think we can find it if it's right on 285.
