You're right, Denver has way more energy companies than Phoenix. A lot of oil/gas/drilling/mineral exploration firms downtown.

Live in Denver, steps to go skiing: Load up skis/boards in car, drive 1-2hrs, have fun, come back home.

Live in Chic.... okay I think you get the point.
What pains me about Denver is the steps to get to the beach

true, there's no ocean or even lake michigan in denver, but i personally got bored after a few hours at the beach, where i can spend all day hiking, skiing, mountain biking, etc. to do activities even remotely like that while living in chicago, you have to drive for hours to get out of the city and then you're in... michigan or wisconsin? sure, there's forests and ski hills there, but they do. not. compare. it's just not worth it.

Default Denver vs. Chicago

I grew up in Chicago (30 years) and lived in Denver for 8 years. There are many factors to consider.

Pro's (Chicago)
Nightlife, Entertainment, Fine Dining, Great Restaurants, Numerous universities and colleges, Two major international airports, Excellent employment opportunities, Sports Teams, Museums, Aquariums, Two Zoos, Lake Michigan, Great Public Transportation, Commuter Trains, Social Opportunities, Great Shopping (upscale clothing boutiques and a number of shopping malls), Strong Union Town, etc...

Pro's (Denver)
Affordable housing, Excellent public schools (Douglas County, Arapahoe County, Broomfield, Boulder County), Large International Airport, Rocky Mountains (ski and snowboarding), numerous outdoor activities, Great quality of life, More days of sunshine, Friendly people, Great libraries, Weather, Snow melts away fast, Great prices and quality on whole cattle and hogs etc...

Con's (Chicago)
Corrupt politicians, segregated communities, social/racial issues, Corrupt city, overall bad public schools, cloudy weather, extreme hot/cold weather, parking tickets and towing (downtown), crowded public transportation, BAD GANG ACTIVITY (southside, westside and surrounding suburbs), Snow/Cold stays for weeks/months, etc...

Con's (Denver)
Restaurants close at 9-10 p.m., Isolated from other major cities= driving to another major city is about 6-8+ hours away (not including Cheyenne, Wyoming), Less employment opportunities = smaller city, etc...

Default Visiting Denver, checking out neighborhoods

I currently live in Chicago (and have for the majority of my life), and am looking to make a move. Denver appeals to us due to the change in landscape and smaller size of the city. I live with my girlfriend in a one-bedroom apartment on the north side of Chicago, and would like to find an area of Denver comparable (about 4-6 miles from downtown with a decent nightlife, but still quiet). We will be visiting in February and would love some tips on neighborhoods to check out. We are looking for a one-bedroom around $1,000 with access to public transportation. Any pointers would be fantastic! Thanks!

More specifically.... LoHi is walkable or bikable to downtown over the pedestrian bridge. Further west, there is the intersection near Tennyson and 38th Ave; and also the intersection near Lowell and 32nd Ave. I specifically live near the former, and can walk to Sunflower Market, 24 Hour fitness, and the shops on Tennyson. Tons of hole in the wall Mexican restaurants around here (if you like that), and $1 bowling at cheap beer at Elitch Lanes (if you like that kind of stuff, haha). I love my neighborhood, but I think LoHi would give you more of that Chicago feel.
