Two points:

1) I find it so interesting that in this day of Google and almost infinite sources of knowledge on-line that people do not research places before they actually move to that location. Before I made the move, i would at least make sure that I could enjoy the location where I am moving.

2) I do not understand why people move into an area and expect that the people in that area should adjust to me more like the people who are moving into the area. The newcomers should plan to make adjustments if they want to fit in in the new location.

It is unreasonable to move to Utah and expect the same liberal liquor laws that you'd find elsewhere. It is unreasonable to move to Nevada and expect that smoking will be banned. And it is unreasonable to move to Iowa and expect everything to be like Miami. Actually, I think that most Iowans are pretty darned overjoyed that Des Moines is NOTHING like Miami with all of its problems.

Other than the sorority girls who painted Go Hawkeyes on my rental car on my last trip to Iowa City, I have always found Iowans pretty friendly ... but they are not shaving their heads to look more like me. (g)

Again! I don't need people to adjust to me. That is going off topic, obviously people don't move to a city an expect to have people change. What I was referring to was how the natives make the outsiders feel. It seems that you're different then you're not welcomed. It's getting rude comments or snarky looks it has nothing to do with people changing

Just want to be sure we're all on the same page on our quirky Des Moinesisms:

Around these parts we call that "going to the store".

Everywhere else on the planet people refer to that as "beating a dead horse".

In other states, my coworkers would wonder what I'm laughing at right now. But because I'm in Iowa they wonder why I'm going to the store.

And because we're all Iowans they know that it's better than anything I could be doing anyplace else.

I wouldn't say the person taking my order at Tasty Tacos yesterday was shady, but she couldn't have been any more rude. There was a very unfriendly vibe in that place. That's a big deal to me when I'm eating at non-chain restaurants. I expect rude service from some McDonald's flunky...but Tasty Tacos?!?!

Nada Es Imposible?

Unless that something is friendly customer service, I guess.
