HyVee is way overpriced and I hated working for them. It's such a ridiculous operation all the way around.

Fareway has always been more my style. Simple. Cheap. Friendly, but not overbearing. I've never worked for them, but I hear they pay a better wage than HyVee. That wouldn't be hard to do. HyVee was barely minimum wage.

I would love to see Woodman's expand to the Iowa market. It would be a great grocery store that would give HyVee a large dose of competition.

Yeah, I know there are more exciting places to eat, but I was too tired to drive around the city.

Gotta love HyVee, though. I stumbled in, tired from looking at houses, not making a lot of sense, and they still served me dinner with a smile.

That was pretty cool. (:
Aaaah, It's cool in the shady shade of Des Moines. My oldest daughter is moving to outside Des Moines come November. She's concerned about all the shadiness that has been brought to everyone's attention on this thread. Very scary!!!

And about Fairway Foods. My son kept telling me about how great the meats were there. Well, we finally got one in Sioux Falls, a town that HyVee essentially owns. He's right, Fairway beats HyVee hands down. The one thing HyVee still does better than almost anyone is their deli.

A few years ago we took a weekend trip to the state park up by Eldora (can't remember the name of it now). We were running around and having a good time and didn't think to stop for lunch until about 2:00. We really wanted to try a local place but they all closed between lunch and dinner so HyVee was the only game in town. The food was hot, fresh, and much appreciated.

I probably hit the deli for lunch once or twice a week, but I don't really grocery shop at HyVee other than some of the sale and gas discount items (makes a big difference when you have a 40 mile daily commute) and as a matter on convenience.

I love Fareway for grocery shopping as well. Good prices across the board and a fantastic meat counter. And since they're closed on Sundays you can sometimes get a good deals on meat Saturday night. I also like the 1970s grocery store vibe.

Unfortunately Fairfield doesn't have Fareway so I do most of my stock-up shopping at the Dutchman's store in Cantril with fill in trips to HyVee, the Maharishi-run natural grocery store, and the Mom-n-Pop store in Keosuaqua.

I will certainly check out Fareway!

As I wrote, I was extremely tired, and you didn't want me getting into an auto accident, right? I might've run into one of you! The HyVee was almost across the street from my hotel, and the baked chicken was much better for my health than a Big Mac.

I'm back in Cols trying to get my house closed, and I'm really missing Des Moines tonight. I know that some of you are really tired of it and anxious to move on, but I gotta tell you that it's 10X easier getting around DSM vs. Cols, both for the under construction freeways and just the sheer mass of people here
right now for the State Fair and the Jazz and Rib Cookoff that starts Friday.

The restuarant part of HyVee is good. HyVee's prices are OK for some things but I prefer Fareway for meat and produce. What I don't get is DAHL'S

Location. As I've moved around, I tend to grocery shop at whatever store is closer and more convenient. Previously it was Hy-Vee, now I live closer to Dahl's so shop there.

In the end, it is a place to buy groceries. I really don't give it as much thought as many here seem to.

Then leave.

But stop the frigging whining. Miami's so wonderful? Then shut your hole, scrape up the $99 and go buy yourself a Greyhound ticket.

Take a long look in the mirror: it's not Iowa that's unfriendly, it's your self-centered self-pitying bullschit that's the problem.
