This winter prefernce thing doesn't have to be an all or nothing kind of debate.
I lived in Iowa for 24 years, visited Arizona at least a dozen times with some visits for for extended period of time. I've lived in Georgia for 35 years & have lived in or spent winter holidays in Fl, Ca.,Vt, N.Y., Il., Wa., Wi. & Canada, etc. There is something positve to be said about winter anywhere.
As for my youth spent in Iowa, I recall the amazing night time thrill of the beauty I'd find when getting up in the middle of the night on a kitchen run. I'd look out the back windows into our yard where the brilliant white ground cover shown brightly under the moonlight or, on a cloudy night, was almost glowing white with the reflected light from street lights whose reflected glare bounced back & forth between the ground and the cloud cover.
Mixed in were the intircate & lacy patterns of twigs & branchs in our woody back vista.
When I'm fortunate every year or two to have a short repeat of that memory when we have a snow fall in Georgia, I think back wistfully to those lovely night time winter impressions.
I miss Iowa on so many levels.

I'm curious if all those green AZ pictures involve irritation and how it would look otherwise.

I agree that winter in Iowa looks kind of dismal, unless there's a fresh snow. BUT...I've lived in other places with less seasonal variation, and it was just unsatisfying to me. I don't expect (or apparently want) summer to last six months, or winter to always be warm. I also expect summer to reach a certain high temperature (not always the case here in Seattle). Luckily, there are people who like all kind of climates, or we'd have a huge problem.

Landscaping often requires irrigation, regardless of where you live. This is the wettest desert in the world, however, and much greener than one might expect it to be, certainly greener than the Mojave to the north. There is plenty of greenery that thrives here with just rainfall alone.

And I just now noticed the typo... LOL

(My lawn in FL had no in-ground irrigation, and its appearance was an irritation to my neighbors...)

Personally, I'm against unnecessary irrigation (which I believe most landscaping to be), but that's another topic.

I prefer winter in Iowa to areas closer to the coasts. People that have lived in this region their whole lives fail to realize how dark winters are in other parts of the country. All they see is higher temps on the forecast and assume those guys have it better. If winter is going to be cold and snowy then I'd prefer it to be sunny and as far as I know parts of the upper Midwest, Great Plains and mountain west are home to the only "real" winters where you might need sun glasses.

No problem. Im a big weather geek and sometimes I post too much in the weather forum. Iowa has a ton of good info available for the public including the one where you were able to track where the city plows were. I wish every state had that.

I was so fascinated that I kept track of Iowas plows during and after the storm.

If you want some good Satellite links let me know. Or snow depth map links.
