Detroit will be the only major city in the US and Canada without a convention center. Seems like a fantastic idea.

The Red Wings could just move out to the Palace.

Detroit has more important things to worry about than convention centers. Many Detroiters have moved to my suburb in recent years. They are not coming here because of our sports teams and convention centers.

They're going to. The lease has expired on Joe Louis. How is the Red Wings leaving going to help Detroit in any facet?

Eastpointe is losing people? All you do is shoot down projects that could help the city, yet can't come up with constructive ideas that would help the city.

Why can't a nice arena be constructed on the riverfront that could be designed to improve and enhance access to the river while attracting people to that area. It wouldn't have to be built 5 feet from the river. For example, it could support cafes, bars, and restaurants 30 feet off the river with a "river walk" area on it. It might actually be a large improvement over what's on the riverfront now.

(I'm not opposed to building a new arena in Detroit for basketball and hockey; I'm just concerned about how it would be funded and whether taxpayer funds would be used.)

Instead of spending $300 million to build an arena (or whatever it costs these days), what if the money were instead spent to fix the Detroit Public Schools? What if our focus were on improving the schools and not sports?

(Of course, giving $300 million to the current DPS leadership would be like pouring money down a sewer; it probably would be better to use that money for an arena.)

Sorry. I should have said "They are coming here not because of our sports teams and convention centers."

I gave you a constructive idea, a few of them in fact. Detroit needs to focus on providing amenities for its residents. Open up the riverfront so that people can enjoy it, instead of building monstrosities that block its view.

If a stadium would be built, it most certainly would be built off of Woodward in the Brush Park area. I really think it would enhance that area and make it more of an entertainment district, with Motor City Casino nearby. The plans for Joe Louis are most likely to expand Cobo. The amount of money it would cost to completely demolish that building, restructure Jefferson, The Lodge, and all the other streets underneath Cobo, and then convert the land to a park and then have the city maintain it would be much more than a stadium.

I don't think that demolishing Cobo Hall is a top priority. I just addressed it because you brought it up (post #15). I do think that any new hockey stadium that is built should be contingent on Ilitch tearing down Joe Louis.

The Riverwalk is a small sliver of land. It hardly constitutes a park. More of a walkway. I think big.
