I am super excited that my wife and I will be relocationg to the Detroit Metro for work. We are looking for a downtown condo to purchase. What can anyone tell me about the Riverfront Warehouse District along the water. Is there alot of restaurants in this part of downtown or would I be better looking a little farther away from the water. Can't wait to get to Detroit and experience living in such a wonderful city.

You amy want to rent first and try it out. It is hard to sell anything if you decide you want ot live in a suburb.

I realy like the condos that are just downriver (south?) from Joe Louis. great views and a good location. You can walk or jump on the people mover and go all over the place.

Detroit is not a bustling place with loads of shops and resturuants around. There is a resturaunt here and there. They are more concentrated near the theaters and Tiger Stadium (I refuse to call it the name of some bank).

The better places to live for being near lots of stuff going on as far as I can tell are riverfront, Eastern Market area, and midtown (near Wayne State. If you are on the riverfornt and near the people mover, you ahve a lot of the CIty covered with a reasonable ride/walk and fabulous views.

Rock on, DIB!

The "Riverfront Warehouse District" (more commonly known as East Riverfront) has a selection of lofts, condos and apartments, and some brownstone-style places. Unfortunately, much of the area between the Renaissance Center and Belle Isle was seized through eminent domain and cleared for a major condo development in the mid 1990s. Long story short, the development never came to fruition and now certain blocks are significantly abandoned. However, E. Riverfront is slowly being redeveloped. In the past 5 years, there has been new construction, including a charter school, office park, artist lofts, a brewery, etc. Plans to build a new senior center in E. Riverfront were announced last week, and eventually, the Globe Trading Building will be rebuilt into a public recreation center. The historic Omni Hotel is also being redeveloped. E. Riverfront will only get better as time goes on.

The benefits of E. Riverfront are that there are some really nice places to live with fantastic views of the river and the skyline. You have immediate access to the Riverwalk, so you walk/bike all the way to downtown or to Belle Isle, one of the nicest urban parks in the country and larger than Central Park in NYC. You will be able to bike all the way to Midtown on the Dequindre Cut, which is a former below-grade railroad corridor turned dedicated bike path. There is also some decent shopping along E. Jefferson. In terms of nightlife and restaurants, your best bet are the places on Joseph Campau. My friend lives in the lofts here and is able to walk to three bar/grilles on his street and the Atwater Block Brewery. The brewery is awesome, like something out of a movie, where you walk into the warehouse and sit at a little bar in the back next to all of the brewing equipment. I've never seen anything like it.

If you want to be closer to the major entertainment venues, take a look at downtown. There are many upscale highrise buildings as well as loft developments. There are easily more than 50 bars and restaurants in downtown. You also have three pro sports stadiums, theaters, and several music venues. You get all kinds of acts downtown, from comedians to magicians to Broadway plays to boxing matches. COBO Hall has a steady stream of world-class exhibitions, including the Auto Show, Autorama, the boat show, and many other events. There are dive bars, coffee shops featuring local theater acts, casinos, a movie theater, ice skating, jazz performances, burlesque shows, dance clubs, free outdoor concerts, riverboat cruises, and fancy wine bars. Hart Plaza hosts major events like the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Country Music Hoedown, Jazz Fest, Freedom Festival Fireworks, and the Red Bull Air Races. There really is no way you can run out of stuff to do downtown. While it is not Manhattan or Chicago's Loop, it is the most fun stuff you'll find to do in the state Michigan packed into 3 square miles, all serviced by an above-ground tram.

If you want to look outside of E. Riverfront and downtown, there's also Lafayette Park, Midtown, Corktown, Woodbridge, and Eastern Market, which are all very urban neighborhoods. Midtown is very large (twice as large as downtown) and comprises several neighborhoods and the region's cultural institutions, such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, Orchestra Hall, the Science Center, several theaters and art galleries, the Detroit Public Library, and Wayne State University. Many great bars and restaurants in those neighborhoods as well.

Without further ado, this is a good list to start looking for places:

Downtown Detroit Partnership | Housing - For Sale (http://www.downtowndetroit.org/ddp/housing-sale.htm - broken link)

Downtown Detroit Partnership | Housing - For Lease (http://www.downtowndetroit.org/ddp/housing-lease.htm - broken link)

If you don't find something you like, try Google or Craigslist.

If you need specifics on a building or neighborhood, just let me know. My girlfriend and I are downtowners and really love it. Detroit's a big city, but we're really a small community, and we're more than willing to help.

Welcome to the city!

Might I suggest Harbor Town? For a spectactular view look at the Park Shelton. If you can, tour one above the 7th floor looking down Woodward to downtown. Absolutely stunning view for the Turkey Day Parade..

What he is looking for is a location where there are a lot of resturaunts. I do not think that there are too many places that fit this request.

Yes I was going to suggest harbortown too! I love the way it sits on the river. I thought about buying one of those condos.

I think that photo must have been taken from their main tower:

We had also thought about it before the bust. If it wasn't for the huge HOA fees we might have pulled the trigger...

The Six Mile / Haggerty Road area has enough resturaunts to feed a small metropolis.
