All the places you listed are downtown. What percentage of the city is considered downtown? 2%? So if you went to Cedar Point and 2% of the rides were working and 98% weren't, would you rave about how "nice" it is?

No one seems to care about the rest of the city, even the boosters. If downtown were a separate city from the rest of Detroit, I wonder what downtowners would have to say about Detroit?
Thank you! While I think it's important to focus on the positives and there definitely are things about Detroit that are good/improving, calling the city as a whole "mostly perfect" is "mostly delusional."

If IMAX is more to your liking, then check it out at the Detroit Science Center over on John R. Of course, the OP may have been referring to real theater, as in, the Fox or the Fisher, which are both very lovely venues that offer some great world class entertainment and are most definitely in Detroit.

Even have dinner and a movie combo..We are thinking the Science Center might close a bit early for us.

Just be careful, especially in the evening. I would not be doing to much wandering around at night on foot, unless you are around say Greek Town Casino, as they have allot of bars and restaurants right there along with Valet parking. If you are driving, watch yourself at the intersections, the natives tend to ignore all forms of traffic devices. Keep alert and the car doors locked. Good luck, you have more guts than I do.

And if you do the Science Center do it in daylight. Very rough area.

OK that is laughable. So people need to be scared to death near the medical center and museums right on Warren? Is someone going to come out of the DIA and rape them? Will a huge gang spill out the Wayne State Welcome Center? Maybe they'll come out of the Charles Wright.

Unlike you I actually spent a lot of time in that area. Hell, I lived in an apartment building on Hancock. I walked around that area many times, from the hospital too many times but that's another story, and up to the CVS across the street. No problems at all.

The worse thing I ever saw was once in broad daylight a white dude was actually reaching out his window jacking off an obviously out of it black dude. I can't remember exactly where that was because it was years ago and caught me totally off guard. It might have been several blocks further up. I almost wish I hadn't mentioned it but I can shrug. Nothing I say will change your trolling mind either way.

If you want to spread alarmist nonsense, at least pick an area easier to slag off. People like spreading this kind of nonsense should be banned. Of course that won't happen because the board posts would drop off a cliff.

The pp who asked about seeing a movie in Detroit is a Detroit native who lived there for many years. I'm sure he knows where it is and isn't safe to be at night, he was just trying to make the point that there aren't many amenities within the city of Detroit itself. As far as being dangerous around the RenCen at night, no, it really isn't, because that area is well patrolled and is home to the Riverwalk and several upscale restaurants and other entertainment venues, as well as the Detroit Princess riverboat, which attracts many people from the suburbs who wouldn't go there if it wasn't safe at night.

If you don't bother to learn the truth about a particular area or you do know the truth but just want to be an internet forum troll, then you probably shouldn't be throwing in your $.02, KWIM?

I think the the most dangerous thing about being near the RenCen in the middle of the night is the overzealous security guards who get annoyed with people walking on the River Walk after 11.

The RenCen and the casinos are where the cops are, along with the areas surround Comerica and Ford Fields. Myself, I see no value in going anywhere near that city unless I absolutely have to. Call me old and jaded, been there and done that and survived working at City and DMC in surgery as a scrub nurse. I have experienced enough of Detroit and other Cities like Memphis TN, Philadelphia PA, Camden NJ, etc., and their equally as diverse cultures.

Is this a joke? Seriously?? When was the last time you were in midtown? Its NOT a bad area. Puh-Lease...
Im a "white suburbanite" from Birmingham and I would never concern myself on when to go to the science center. Just because people are black doesnt mean they are dangerous!! Also, just because a house doesnt have a paver driveway doesnt mean there are predators fighting over their next Victims....

This is why I hate the suburbs...elitist mentality

The Midtown area is pretty nice. They're definitely building it up and lots of youths are moving in there. The Jefferson corridor is pretty cool, too.

I agree, the theaters, sports complexes, and restaurants make it a nice city.
But the shopping sucks. I am not a shopoholic by any means, but are there any major stores like Macy's, Nordstroms, heck - even a Target or Kohl's within the city limit is there? Even Walmart?

When people think of world class cities, shopping is one of the first things that come to mind. Look at Chicago and the Magnificent Mile for instance.

I was recently in the UK and met a British guy at a pub that has a sister that lives across the border near Windsor. He was talking about the great deals he encountered when he went to the US and went shopping. I asked him where he went shopping, and he said 'In some of the cities outside of Detroit'. They spent very little time (and money) inside Detroit other than to see a Red Wings game.
