Why do people think that the poster who said Inkster and Higland Park are trendy places was being serious? They chose the most bland and awful suburb that could think of to answer the question. (S)He was being facetious. Sarcasm get it? It was funny.
body can really believe that someone thought Inkster is a trendy place to hang out.

The trendiest neighborhoods in the city are these (in this order):
  1. Corktown
  2. Eastern Market
  3. Woodbridge
  4. Midtown
  5. Hamtramck
  6. Downtown
  7. Lafayette Park
  8. East Riverfront
  9. Mexicantown
  10. Boston-Edison
  11. New Center
  12. The Villages
These aren't necessarily the nicest or even the richest areas of Detroit, but they are all pretty trendy. By "trendy," I mean unique styles, indy stores, interesting bars and restaurants, non-conformist attitudes, etc. Runner-ups would be University District, Palmer Woods and East English Village.

This is all my opinion of course...

Seems like a "trendy" area would be where certain hip people congregate, and not necessarily where they live. So there would be scattered trendy hangouts in a city and not necessarily trendy neighborhoods or districts like Soho or Greenwich.
Detroit's past had the Cass Corridor for one. Art studios, lofts, bars, the college lifestyle. There was a short-lived Plum Street.
A real "district" would be a nice addition (Hastings Street anyone?). Yeah, I'm beating my gums....

Hip, Young, and Trendy????????
The young part I understand, but please explain to a dumb guy like me in details what you mean by Hip & Trendy.

For ex: you could start your explanation with the following: ¨Hip and Trendy are words to describe neighborhoods that cater to people who get dressed up and go to bars to buy alcohol at double or triple the price vs. non-hip/trendy bars. Hip & Trendy means that hot chicks go and sit down on cool modern furniture, listen to electronic dance beats, and are cool enough to let the OP hang out there and pick some of them up so the OP can get laid, as long as the OP buys them drinks and gets them a little wasted.¨

And you Boomers that raised your kids to covet ¨Hip and Trendy¨ ought to be ashamed. One of the huge problems in this country are that the GenYers spend too much time thinking about Hip & Trendy and not enough time thinking about ways to ween the country off of foreign oil or to come up with innovative ways to make the healthcare systems more efficient, or develop cutting edge manufacturing jobs in robotics that will not be outsourced to China. They expect the government to tell them what to do, and they get mad at you and cite Facebook (which only generates a revenue of 1-2Billion/year) as en example of ¨cutting edge¨ developed by young people, when really 95% of the GenYers are tools and only use technology, they don´t develop it.

It´s a rare thing to meet a ¨Hip & Trendy Young Professional¨ who actually tries to understand the problems of the country. Most of them just care about getting drunk and laid. While the laid part is not so bad, many GenYer guys are a bunch of wussies that feel sorry for themselves if they cannot get laid on a regular basis.

So, basically, you're upset because the youngest generation hasn't been able to immediately fix all the destruction caused by the boomers?

The boomers were the worst generation ever. Since they came of age, the US has been on the steepest, unmitigated decline in history. Prior to the Boomers, the Great Generation pulled us out of the Great Depression, won a world war, and set the US on a course for prosperity. What happened? The boomers squandered it all when they became adults and are leaving their kids and grand kids holding the bag. They outsourced all the jobs, they never invested in modern infrastructure, they spent tons of money they didn't have on nonsense, they birthed a new level of corruption and corporate cronyism, they sold us to the Chinese.

No offense to the decent boomers out there, but since the boomers took over, we've gone nothing but down the drain, and are still sliding fast. I can't wait for that generation's reign to end.

A "young professional" by definition at least has a job, and must be doing something besides partying.
One CAN be hip, trendy, and grounded - they're not mutually exclusive. Your definition is too narrow is all I'm saying.

Wow. Bitter. I'm not even going to ask why.

Every cranky old man from every generation says the same thing about the younger generation.

Never mind that generation Y is fighting a war on two fronts that was started by Boomers. And coming of age in one of the worst economies since the depression - created by decisions made by boomers.

And has far lower rates of drug use than boomers during the 1960s.

But yes how dare they wonder where a cool place to hang out a Saturday night is. After the boomers NEVER did that. The 60s were ALL about practical, realistic ways of making the United States a more powerful country.

These are good points in your post. Problem is, obstruction is coming more from big boys in the private sector than govt itself. Many solutions are already known but are being fought off (by Big Oil & multinationals for instance). Foreign nations are practicing protectionism which we're not. What manufacturing jobs cannot be outsourced?
Read the many threads on this forum and note the resistance to change. Money rules!
But other threads deal with this.
