I am a single parent being relocated to the Detriot area. My office is located in livonia. My son is going to the sixth grade. I looking for a location that has reasonably price housing and good schools. I would also need to be close to after school care. Any suggestions

From close to reasonably close:

Livonia, Northville, Plymouth, Canton,

South Lyon, Novi, Farmington/Farmington Hills, Walled Lake.

Probably easier to look right around the office area. If you like driving / commuting, look at South Lyon--a great area. Plymouth-Canton schools do not have the best reputation. There is an area of Westland that is in the Livonia School district where housing might be cheaper than Livonia proper.
Not sure what the budget is, but Northville also has some very nice areas. Farmington (south of Nine Mile) may work as well?

All of michigan has a very diverse environment. It may snow one day, and be 60 degrees the next. Sometimes the environment diversifies from one hour to the next. You cna have 40 -60 degree temp changes in one day, rain, sun, snow, all in a single day. go from using AC to building a fire int he fireplace. Definitely a diverse environment here.

Obviously talking to different people than I do?

If you are looking for cultural diversity, then Livonia is probably not for you. May be Garden City? Dearborn Heights? Belleville is another at the top of the diversity list.

Anything north of 12 mile that isn't a large urban city will probably lack diversity. The farther north the LESS diverse.

Thinking OP meant cultural diversity? As in racial and economically?

^^ I think the comment was tongue-in-cheek.
Livonia, Warren, East Detroit (Eastpointe) absorbed the bitter white flight. Livonia and Eastpointe may be the last "holdouts" on that score. Upscale blacks found more acceptance in Southfield. Not saying I know why.
North Woodward - Oakland County was more eclectic (maybe because it had working-class Pontiac + yuppie cities) although there was an ongoing brawl between L. Brooks Patterson and the Coleman Young administration.
