I first want to say thank you everyone for your tips a few months back, I ended up going to Michigan around Christmas over Thanksgiving due to car troubles. I liked Detroit for the most part, but had to get off the interstate to get gas here and I felt less than safe, was that just me worrying or was I on to something? Google Maps

(I don't mean to be rude I truly loved the city and state when I visited)

I'd say: trust your instinct. That area is "less than safe", but on the other hand, not everyone that stops for gas in Detroit gets carried away on a stretcher. Even in the most dangerous areas, you are still fairly safe as long as you minimize interaction. Gratiot is a main thoroughfare with a lot of traffic, so it's safer than the side streets, especially if it was daytime and there were a fair number of people around.

Wouldn't be my preferred choice to stop for gas in Detroit though. I've spent a lot of time driving around in Detroit taking pictures. If I get a bad vibe, I move on.

Harper & Gratiot??? U had every right to feel "less than safe" if your not used to that type of environment. I know people who have lived in Detroit all their life and will not even get off the exit in that area. Especially at night. But there is still a very low chance something will happen to u within 5 minutes of you just getting gas so you will most likely be fine. Just common since will enhance your safety buy a lot. Don't go down side streets in places like that, don't stop at that gas station if there is like 50 people just standing out there hanging out, stuff like that.

This may be the wrong thread, but I am on a mission. Someone bought a "Bookies Journal" dated 1937. They thought it was horse racing but have since decided it is dog racing. It has the name John S Curtin, Detroit Michigan and the initial D.U.R.Y. Anyone have a clue what that could mean? Thanks in advance.
