My son is currently in training to be a NW Airlines flight attendant and will be based in Detroit. He will be having 2 other roomates and is looking for a relatively nice but safe apt. (3 bdrm.) close to the airport. What can he expect to pay (total before the split) and would it include all utilities? Also, I keep hearing that car insurance is very high in Detroit. Would it be better to stay in another area to have cheaper insurance even if he has to drive a bit further? He has a 2003 Honda Accord. Also, what type of taxes are in Michigan? One last thing - (mom speaking here)...what about safety issues? He's a country boy... This info. is needed rather quickly.

Would the Canton area be considered close to the airport? If he is planning on spending a lot of time in the Detroit area, I would suggest he live a bit further from the airport because most of the burbs near it are not to enticing. Canton seems to be a place where a lot of young people are moving and it is relatively close compared to much of the Detroit area. If he chose to live a bit further, perhaps Ypsilanti or Ann Arbor.

If he's employed by Northwest, I'm guessing Metro.....Yes, Canton would be close, Westland, Plymouth, Northville, Livonia....basically anywhere on the west side would be close enough. Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Allen Park. Anywhere even close to I-94 would get you there fairly quick. Even Ann Arbor. New Boston, Van Buren.....Insurance won't be that bad in the suburbs like Livonia, Plymouth, Northville, Canton. Tons of nice apartments for under $1000.00. With two other roommates he can live cheap around western Wayne county. Try around downtown west Dearborn. Lots of new bars, restaurants and apartments. Also newer townhouses with some probably up for rental. Also try downtown Plymouth. You can take I-275 right to I-94 and the airport. Plymouth will be more expensive.

If he goes south of the airport a few miles it becomes quite a fit of farmland. If he still wants an apartment in the country type feel, have him look in New Boston, or the area south of the airport becomes fairly country like.
