OP, I agree with much of your post. North Americans (and increasingly those in other areas of the world) are eating too much, too often. Constantly spiking and elevated insulin causes tons of problems in the body. And it is criminal how much kids are fed...even the skinny ones. Snacks, snacks, snacks, all day long. It's good to get hungry before one eats again.

Yep, gotta have the occasional treat! Mine is a small square of 75% dark chocolate. Soul-satisfying and much better than a pint-- or more of chocolate ice cream...

That's right. Sometimes you have to nourish the soul. The treats offer nothing nutritional other than "feel good" (though your dark chocolate has health benefits lol) and we all could use a little dose of that :-)

While I AM somewhat of a food Nazi (per my husband and kidlet), I don't want to come across that I am against treats and stuff. I LIKE junk food, I just don't eat it a lot.

I don't feel well if I eat fast food and chain restaurant food, and most cookies/cakes/candy is way too sweet for me, it leaves a gross after taste in my mouth. But you put a lava cake, well made dessert, mousse or something in front of me? I'm a happy camper.

Right now my achilles heel is corn chips and salsa, so I just make sure I eat it in small amounts, or add black beans, cilantro and avocado.

If I did not have health, age and weight considerations, I would be eating crap all the time. But still lots of veggies, just always liked them.

Much of this is so true. Do you ever feel like your body stands up and applauds after you eat a really great salad, soup, or roasted vegetable medley??

Sometimes I really think I can feel the nutrients racing through my body, nourishing all the needy places. But then, I've been told I have a very active imagination.

I actually do! Sometimes I eat something and I get this rush of.... hard to describe, but yeah, it feels like my body is standing up and applauding. Like it is really happy I ate it. I just feel "wellness" emanating out from my mid section.

As weird as it sounds, I pay attention to that, and eat more of whatever gave me that feeling.

Whew! Glad I'm not the only one who gets that feeling of well-being. Mine usually comes from a really good salad with lots of dark, leafy greens and orange-y things like carrots, bell peppers and such....

I don't get that reaction from eating healthy food, but I do feel "normal". On the flip side, when I eat garbage I have gastric distress as soon as the next day. It has gotten worse over the past six months - my body has become adjusted to healthier food so that when I don't eat that way I have problems. I traditionally pig out during vacation and gain. The last time I did that though I spent more time having stomach problems and never leaving the bathroom. I couldn't even enjoy a nice local cheeseburger without the inevitable upset stomach. I may have to rethink how I operate when we go to New Orleans to celebrate our 15th :/

I've had the same issues since my early 40s. I've spent a few vacations taking the kids to Disney World. We always do the signature dining there and one year it really caught up with me. My stomach was such a mess, I had to go see a gastroenterologist!! I also get the issues with having intestinal problems. I had a few days in the park where my mornings were spent running into the restrooms. No I was not sick. There was just a revolution going on in my body from eating junk, rich foods.

The last trip I took, I really, really moderated. Had a good, high fiber cereal in my room each morning and just ate normal portions, less dessert.

Over the holidays I was overeating just about every day (for 3 months this went on). I was having issues with too much time in the "bathroom" and waking up at night with stomach pain. I've been back on the disciplined plan now for 3 weeks and all that has gone away.

I think that sums it up. I wish I weighed 25 pounds less, but I am almost 59, and have watched my weight go up and down for my entire life.

Now I focus on just doing my best and exercising (two miles of walking) five times a week.

Being sedentary is what does us in - in my opinion.
