I usually dont go by calories, I go by carbs. I can eat 3,500 calories and still lose weight.
The key is the carbs.

I would say %80 of my diet is bread, rice and beans. This has lots of carbs right? I also drink a lot of soft drinks.

Switch to whole grain bread, brown rice and kidney beans and you'll be doing just fine.

You should have ZERO soft drink intake, or at the most maybe 6 cans of soft drink per year.

If you are exercising, dont worry about how much carbs, etc. Just eat a good clean diet (with the whole grain breads and brown rice, etc.) and stay completely away from soft drinks and sugar.

That's alot of carbs and although you didn't state your age i wonder if you had an A1c blood test what is would show?

Also don't be terrified of fat as there are good types. I take 60 grams of olive oil daily along with the omega-3 fat's in the salmon i eat and i have about zero fat on me and i know my arteries are clean and clear at 44.

I am 20 years old. I just had a physical and the doctor said I'm great and my cholestrol is non existent. I am about to join the military so I am putting on weight because once I get to basic I'll loose a bunch.

Is there really a difference between bean types? Do kidney beans have more protein then black beans?

O.K. at 20 and in good shape don't even worry about your A1c as i thought you were older. When i was really skinny at 17-21 i had alot of banana and peanut butter milk shakes that i made and consumed daily which finally helped me gain weight along with hitting the weights.

The beans with more protein and less carbs are lentils.
And your cholesterol was in the normal range, nobody is cholesterol free(you need cholesterol to live, a lot of hormones comes from cholesterol especially steroids.)
