I was watching one of the animal cop rescue programs on animal planet yesterday and one story was an older dog that fell into a water filled ditch and fought its way out injuring its feet. A jogger saw it and called for help. The dog was rescued and it had a collar and tags which made everyone hopeful...however the tags lead to a dead end and they could not find the owner so here was this poor elderly dog with little chance of getting adopted....well it turns out that the jogger could not stop thinking about the old dog so when he ended up adopting it so there was a happy ending.
The first dog I got on my own from what back then was called death row at the shelter ...meaning at days end all dogs from that row would be put down also was found with tags yet the people had moved so the shelter was unable to locate them. Had I not saved her she would have died that day because her owners forgot to update information.
So I want to remind everyone to update informantion be it at animal control for your dog license, be it with the microchip company if your dog is microchipped and be it any ID tag you dog has if you move or change phone #'s. The tags and microchips are only good at getting a lost pet returned if you have the current address or phone # on file.
Great reminder. A while back we went away and left ours w/ a petsitter and even put her phone # on the tags, should they get loose. Once in a while you do hear about that happening and if the owners are in another state or far away, they might not even know their pet is missing and there c/b a very sad outcome for all but thankfully most petsitters are diligent and responsible and hopefully would go looking and contact the owner.
Mine aways have up to date tags and the microchips are registered and with the correct contact info. Our pet sitter puts her own tags on them, as soon as they get there. They say, "Please help, I'm lost!" with her phone number on them.
My dog's tag has FOUR phone numbers on it. Our home phone, our 2 cell phones and my parent's home #.
