I have a 4 year old Havanese who is the best dog and well behaved. About 8-10 times in his life he has gone crazy with what appears to be Panic Attacks.
He will try to climb on top of furniture, he cries, just flips out. Ever had a dog like that ? It's not as if he's dreaming and having nightmares.

Any dog shrinks out there willing to speculate ?
Sounds like it could be seizure activity. Canine seiszures are very different from human ones. Have you discussed this with your vet? If not I encourage you to do so. Rule out all organic possibilities first. Let us know how he is doing!
Vet visit would probably not be a bad idea. As importantly, keep a diary of time of day/night this happens. What is happening in his surroundings during this time. Try and listen for any unusual noises you many normally not notice, storms moving in, sounds on tv or in house. Does he wake up with these "attacks", do they just suddenly occur, does he appear disoriented for a time afterwards, rethink to see if there was a change in his behavior right before "attacks" happened. See if you can find a common denominator.
Note any unusual foods he may have had, any unusual daily activities that might have occurred. Did he go for an extra long run, get lesser exercise. Did you have company over...etc.
If these are seizures, they can be difficult to diagnose because they are atypical of the "normal seizure". I would hate to see your dog put on medication unnecessarily as the meds can be very mood altering and can come with some strong side effects.
Good luck.
