I've never had this happen and wondered what others think. I know dogs dream, but just a few minutes ago my puppy was sleeping in his crate with the door open. I was here in the office but my SO was 3 feet away watching football on TV.
All of a sudden I hear a growl and a snarl and my puppy bolted out of his crate. There was no one else/or animals nearby - my cat Manny came running through the cat barrier at the same moment I came out of the office.
It sounded like he was being attacked. Could he have had a dream bad enough that made him think he was under attack? My other dogs never had dreams like that.
I'm a little worried as this is the first time I've heard that sort of sounds coming from him.
Awww poor puppy, its hard to say what happened. I know I have had dreams like this myself, the kind where you have to pinch yourself and make sure it was a dream.??
I think they are more sensitive to their surroundings than we are, so its hard to say. Hopefully just a puppy nightmare. I sure wish I could read their minds sometimes.
My dog did this once. He was sleeping in the living room on the couch and jumped up real fast running to the dining room growling at the same time. Earlier in the day, a big dog walked up to him when we were outside. He thought the dog was trying to attack him, but he just wanted to play and he didn't realize it. That is the only thing I could think of that made him have a nightmare.
Mine has had a couple times he woke up startled. Never so much so that he jumped up and ran or anything though.
On the subject of dreams my favorites are the ones where they are running and barking. You get that airy halfway bark and the legs twitch. Funny as all heck to watch and you just know they are having a blast.
Yeah - he has the dreams when he moves his paws and makes little sounds, but this dream was different. We did meet a dog in the state park on the trails that totally ignored him but then snapped at him when he wouldn't leave it alone (my SO had the leash and was talking to this dog's owner - I would have pulled him away but my SO didn't). Most dogs he meets are nice and I think it surprises him when he meets one that isn't. Maybe that set him off?
