Depends on the dog. I rarely get to name dogs anymore, since I adopt older ones who know their names. I did recently draw the line at a 10-year-old boy named… Marshmallow… and changed him, in desperation, to Sharpie (he is a yellow lab/Sharpei mix and has wrinkles on his face that I call his "sharpies.") Oh, and little "Monsta" became "Dusty" although I can see why the kennel named him "monsta."
Most dogs end up with nicknames of two syllables no matter what you named them- like "Powell" became "Pally." "Eloise" has become "Weezer." It's just how names work out.
I currently have a large tough girl named… Bear. And it suits her.
I only got to name puppies once, a brother pair, corgi/border collie. Kiko and Kona. I loved those names and that pair.
