I would be furious if a groomer did that to my Schnauzer! NO it is not a normal Schnauzer cut!!! It takes a very long time to grow their coat out. You do NOT need to take a chill pill! Your dog got butchered by that groomer. I am so sorry that happened to you and your baby. You did tell the groomer about not wanting him cut really short. If the groomer felt your dog was too matted to save coat, he or she should have explained that to you and explained what s/he would be able or willing to do. She could save coat and charge more or shave coat and charge the standard fee. A “sport cut” shouldn’t mean a quarter inch hair cut on the legs. I suspect you got a Schnauzer because you liked the Schnauzer look. Next time, bring a picture of a Schnauzer groomed as you would eventually like your dog to look. Be VERY specific about what you do and don’t want to see. I was a groomer. If I couldn’t deliver the look you wanted, I’d tell you and would tell you why. I’d also tell you what I could do. You are the customer. If your dog was so severely matted that it would be cruel to save coat, I would have told you so ahead of time. You would then have the option of finding another groomer.

Well, since this is coming back up, I'll chime in. I was even shocked when a groomer in a new area we moved to asked if we wanted our schnauzers to have a summer cut. What! A summer cut? I know what they meant now but then had never heard of such a thing. A schnauzer cut is a schnauzer cut. Eyebrows, beard, mustache, furnishings....

And nothing different should happen without the owner's knowledge.

Next time just take a picture with you. I have two labradoodles and when I go to a new groomer I always take a photo of how I want them cut, if I don't most groomers make them look like poodles which embarrasses my dogs so much that they don't want to go out in public

I would be LIVID and I would NOT have paid, UNLESS they said he was so badly matted that it was the only option. Removing mats is not only time consuming it is painful for the dog. If they have a lot of mats, the kindest thing to do is just shave them down and start over. If it did not have a lot of mats, that is one groomer that would never get another cent from me and I would make sure I reviewed her. I have a miniature schnauzer and he has never been to a groomer. I can count on one hand the number of pet schnauzers I have seen with a proper groom. Most have skirts up on their sides, long "aprons" on their chest, shaved bridge of the nose, eyebrows cut straight across, cocker cuts, really long furnishings like some sort of stuffed toy, etc. I learned to groom my own so I know it's done right. Before I got mine, I was getting prepared by being in a Minature Schnauzer forum. There were tons of posts from people picking their schnauzer up to find the beard had been cut short, bridge fo the nose shaved, legs shaved, etc. Like your daughter, they were in tears and very angry. Some things, like an apron or cocker cut can be easily remedied, but growing out the bridge of the nose or beard length can take many months.

The OP did say it was some time since her husband was able to groom the dog. I doubt this happened, because if it did, they would offered it right up. But the first thought i had was the dog's coat was matted. It's far easier to clip (and kinder), than to force a comb out.
