In my quest for Christmas gift ideas for my dogs I found a site that marketed their earrings for dogs. I couldn't believe what I was reading but it's apparently a thing.

Giving Dogs Tattoos And Piercings Is A Growing Trend

I can't believe that people would do this but I'm not sure which is worse, the tattoos or the piercings. I never understood why people pierce their babies ears but I learned to live with it. I'll never learn to live with mutilating an animal like this.

I can't imagine how many earrings get ripped out of a dogs ear leaving them permanently disfigured.

I did find a company called Bow Wow Bling that sells temporary tattoos and glue on earnings. I think that's kind of cute but it's not for me or my dogs.

Oh my God!!!!

Good that it seems to be a growing trend for places to outlaw this.

Dogs get injured all the time, do they care? I don't think the ear-ring is going to bother him, or when it gets ripped out.

People do it just to see your reaction.

I think that is a very cruel thing to do to an animal.

My dogs would be quite upset if I tattooed them! And the earrings would be ripped out quickly. They might rip them out on their own. I think this is just wrong.

Well the article says that the backlash usually causes stores to stop with the piercings. That poor cat can't possibly like having her ears weighted down with those earrings. The shallowness of some people and their choices never ceases to amaze me.

It's no worse than ear cropping. I can believe cropping hasn't been banned in the US yet. It is illegal throughout Europe.

I think the earrings are idiotic but, truthfully, the tatto will identify the dog if it goes missing.

I had my Rottweiler's tattooed in one ear and their inner thigh. At one point in time, I lived in an area where Rotts were stolen left and right and ended up in dog fighting rings. While the ear could be lopped off, the thigh couldn't.

The tatto in the link is a bit ridiculous but try and say that is your dog, if you stole it

I wouldn't expect everyone that has enough uncommon sense to piece their dogs ears to have enough common sense to use a stud that won't hurt the dog if it gets ripped out. Take for example those huge dumbbells on the cat in the OP.

Dogs ears are tender little bits, especially on smaller dogs.

Totally agree.

You're right. It's still a modification done just for vanity. The only thing I can support is tail docking when it's done for health reasons, but not to hold the dog to some beauty standard.

I can agree with this. It's not a terrible idea when done for identification. Theft isn't a problem around here that I know of, but I can completely understand your position.
