I'm used to my dogs having those chasing bunny rabbit dreams, and at times growling and moaning in their sleep. Well, last night my blue healer who is the most independent don't touch me dog I've ever owned went in to the bedroom and layed down on his bed in the corner to go to sleep.
I was sitting on the sofa watching tv when at 10pm, he came bolting in, jumped on the sofa next to me shaking. His eyes were big as saucers and he whined. I petted him and he just snuggled up next to me, something he has never done before.
He stayed there and curled up and went to sleep while I petted him. When I went to bed at 11, he followed me and curled up on his bed and slept.
My older one did the same thing. Most of the time, she would sleep in her area just fine. Now and then, in the middle of night, after everyone is asleep, suddenly I would hear her whining, struggling to get out the baby gates, scratching and pushing the gates as hard as she can. Sometimes when we don't lock her up for the night, she would jump into bed, forcing her 70 lb of fur and fat between my husband and I. Her eyes would be dilated, panting, hair falling out, all signs of stress.
It wouldn't be too unusual to find animals who sleep may have bad dreams, like people do.
There were a few times Jazz and Dash acted that way and came rushing into the room I was in terrified. Once it was my smoke alarm battery was getting low so every couple of minutes the alarm had started to do just one Chirp ( they hated that alarm big time so even one chirp sent them running) another time it was someone had started setting off fire crackers some where in the neighborhood, distant thunder could do it too as they would hear it when it was far off and I was not hearing it but the next day I would hear about the thunder in the nearby mountains. So while it could be a dream it could also be a noise they heard but you did not as dogs hear much better then we do. The can also sense things like very small earthquakes so there could be many different reasons for the behavior.

What was that all about?
My bichon has nightmares every year or so....pretty much as you state......and he's going on 16 years now. Thankfully it doesn't seem to effect him past a couple of hours afterwards.
Tribbles was sleeping next to me on the couch yesterday, and I realized she was having a nightmare. Whining, moaning, REM sleep with eyes darting back and forth under the lids. I was about to wake her up when she opened her eyes, looked around, and gave a huge sigh of relief. She clearly realized she'd had a dream, and it was "just a dream." Such a "human" reaction! Fascinating to watch.
