I've just been reading this story which I find really outrageous, on the city's part.

Retired officer must fight for K9 companion in auction - 23ABC News

The retiring officer offered, or was told he could buy for (the facts are not clear on that) $3500. But then was told instead the dog would be auctioned because that is what is done with "excess city properly".

In the comments section I discovered a gofundme page had been started to ensure there is adequate money for the officer to bid high enough on Ajax to win him. It's already up to $16,000+ Any remaining funds will go to the city police department to purchase needed things for the K-9 unit.

Whoever is being stubborn about this city policy is shameful, but council members don't have much conscience, in my experience, anyway. My way or no way is how most of them seem to operate. But it looks as though the good people of Marietta, Ohio have found a way around the wall.

Wow- I get that the dog is valuable "property" belonging to the city, but this is wrong and a pretty shabby way to treat two officers who have risked their life to keep the community safe. I hope he has enough to buy his partner at auction.

In reading the comments under various reports and the gofundme page, it seems the more common way when a K-9 officer retires is he is asked to 'buy' his partner dog for $1.00. I've also seen comments where they stated their Chiefs insisted on the honor of paying that dollar!

Marietta is being very foolish. Wonder when their next election is.....

The cynic in me wonders if the city staged the whole thing, just to raise money. I haven't been able to confirm it, but I also read the starting bid for Officer Ajax is set at $3,500.

<edit> other stories claim the problem is at the State level. However in just the last few minutes the gofundme amount has been raised from $16,100 to $16,935!

Oops, now $17,045!

Well the K9 who has been trained to partner with that particular officer won't do well being sold off to someone else. Police dogs learn commands in a foreign language, usually Belgian, and are very loyal and protective of their partners. STUPID idea by that city. I can't imagine $3500 would make a difference to the city treasury at all. And if I was that officer as soon as I got my partner back, I would transfer to another department.

Amazing...the loyal dog was an Officer when he served and risked his life. Upon retirement, he is reduced to 'property' The city should be ashamed of themselves.

The officer is retired. But I agree it is stupid to auction off a police trained dog (ALSO an officer) to the highest bidder. Even disregarding the fact that dog and man are bonded, the potential for abuse of the dog is huge.

That's an outrage. I've always heard of dogs retiring to their human partner's home. An officer has a right to the dog s/he has bonded with for all those years, and after loyal service, a police dog has the right to spend its golden years with the human he or she loves, in the place that has been home for so long!

OK I posted another post..... NOT the Dog retiring its the Human!!! To retire the Dog Early will cost the City $5-6,000!!

What I cant understand is WHY they Paired an Older cop to a dog that young & could be passed to another officer upon retirement. Sad for the Human Cop. IMO these 2 should never been paired.

Really? So your child is kidnapped and a K-9 tracks and finds the perp and your child just before they're murdered. How much is that dog worth to you? These hero dogs are worth more than most humans, imo.
