For the first week we had him I called our new pup Patrick. He looks like a Patrick. Then my family decided they didn't like that name and we had a 30 minute pow-wow to come up with a new name. I acquiesced on Teddy but simply cannot remember his name. Half the time I call him Timothy or Patrick or Hey You. The kids call him No Name and DH ends up calling him Lucy- the name of our recently departed pup.
I know he is new to us and hope eventually we will all get on board but just wondering how much damage we are doing to his poor lil puppy psyche by calling him different names.
He'll be fine. Our dog only has one name, but he will also respond to the word dog. We've never called him this, but he's been observant enough to realize that when we say dog we are referring to him. He also knows our names. If my wife is returning home I'll tell my son Mommy will be home soon and the dog will run to the door recognizing the name. Dogs are pretty smart in a lot of ways.
I agree with the others do not worry about it as every dog and cat I have had and that includes since childhood had their real name but also a few nicknames and it has never seemed to matter they know their names but also respond to the nicknames but not to each others names.
All of my guys have various nicknames and respond without a problem.
