That's what I was wondering.

Not all dogs like the butt sniff.

One of my dogs only does face to face and then walks away. She is friendly dog but doesn't like it when dogs go back there.

My other dog does the butt sniff but some dogs sniff too long or push their noses into her area after the butt sniff and she gets mad (she barks angrily). So, I pull off the other dog before that happens. She has like a 3 second limit for greeting.

It's part of a proper dog greeting. I just don't let it go on too long.

I thought the same thing!

I don't let my dog sniff peoples butts. That is rude and it is easy to put a stop to it.

Dogs sniffing dogs butts is ok!

It's the anal gland. It is like a message about what the dog is about. Is it sick, is it friendly, and the smell is unique so have we met before.

Yeah I never thought about it much until I have a dog that is very timid about socializing. Now I notice that if she does that, she already has confidence enough TO DO that, and is far more likely to be friends with the dog afterward.

She certainly knows dog friends on sight though. She has taken to barking furiously at me if one is walking by.

I then tell the owner of the other dog about the butt greeting and how it can allay aggression in a first meeting. It works for me.
I do that, too!

It depends. In the house when a guest is bringing in a dog, YES! For sure. Dog park? Depends on the dog and owner. There are several I avoid because they aren't nice.

Some of you have come up with the weirdest reason to allow this.... It is a Dog thing! REALLY so you dont mind your dog eating SH*T either after all its a dog thing too! Seen many a Dog fight that started cause there are Dogs that Don't like the Butt sniffing any more than Humans want a dog sticking their nose in their privates. Also seen a guy get Bit in the Balls cause he allowed a dog to sniff him! So Not only is it Rude to allow your dog to do this Your dog Can cause YOU to get Sued! Seen one dog get his eye ripped out cause he wouldn't leave another dog alone!
