Two of my 3 rescues clamor to the kitchen when we dispense ice cubes from the fridge. As we are in the USVI (and even if we were still FL) it is critical to keep the dogs hydrated. One of the them is about 8 mos. old and the other is a little older than a year.
My initial inclination is that since they enjoy them, and it gets more fluids in them and keeps them cool, that it would be fine. Just concerned about the impact on their teeth. They have soft chew toys as well as daily milkbones - experienced thoughts on this? Thanks very much.
Used to give them to my dogs in the summer months.....they go crazy for them. But stopped, not good for their teeth and plus they make a mess with the ones left behind!
How are femur bones harmful to their teeth? I have always given my dogs femur bones and they've all had wonderful teeth. Is there something we should be aware of?

What I had learned years ago when I had puppies is to take a clean washcloth, soak in fresh water and then freeze it. Let the puppy chew or gnaw on the frozen washcloth thus giving the youngster relief. The combination of the ambient air temperature a long with the saliva from the pup the cloth won't stay frozen long, perhaps 30 minutes or so. I used to keep several in the freezer at a time.
Dukester - thanks - great idea. Naturally, having 3 means we have plenty of "dog towels/cloths" so I will definitely try that. Thanks for the great feedback everyone!
They're not good for dogs - produce a LOT of fractured teeth. Just google "ice dogs teeth" and you'll see!
are you saying ice cubes are no good for any aged dog? i really hope not becuase i've been giving both my dogs ice cubes every night as part of our going to bed routine. they sit and look at my water until i give it to them. the older dog has been enjoying them for 8 years!

It's been icy here in CT and my dog constantly bites off pieces of ice in our backyard and eats them, so I hope it's OK too. I have no way of stopping him... only springtime can do that.
