If the Obamas choose a hybrid, unethical breeders will try to cash in-and puppies are likely to suffer.

Regardless of what the Obama's choose to get people will always exploit animals for a quick buck. I personally could not care less if they get Purebred or a Mutt from the shelter but allot of other people seem to. I personally dont like what he is doing but thats for another forum. Some reporters will put his name to anything to gain interest in their stories which would otherwise go unread.

Unfortunately, this happens when any specific breed, pure or mixed, is highlighted thru commercials, movies, celebrity, etc. There's always a BYB or puppymill ready to exploit the sudden popularity.

I remember when Obama first said they'd be getting a dog and hearing specific breed enthusiasts saying, "Oh, I hope they pick a Beagle, or a Poodle." I am an owner of two breeds I find near and dear to my heart, but I'd never be publicly suggesting or quietly hoping they'd choose either one. I'd hate to see the breed exploited that way.

It is tough when allergies are a major factor. I am sure they will make a good decision and do what is in the best interest of the family and dog. I wish them luck! They are a good family, but just not dog experienced. They will get lots of help and advice.

I think someone will find something wrong with anything they do.

Default Just my brief morning ramblings...

Aside from the Obama's, I continue to find it interesting that the Amish and Mennonite breeders (among other unmoral and unethical breeders) lack the compassion gene. I've said it a million times, anyone who commits animal cruelty is a danger to our society. The correlation between animal abuse and abuse towards people is too strong (as most people already know). If we as a society lose or become desensitized to compassion, we are all in a world of trouble.

I did like when NEWSWEEK informed Horizon Organics Diary Products of B&R's puppy business, the company sent a representative to investigate. Upon finding breeding dogs at the farm, Horizon suspended its dealings with the farm. Horizon's stance impressed me and makes me respect them more as a business for being socially conscious.

I'm sure this is nothing new to those who frequent this pet forum...but I have to think that there are numerous people out there who are still in the dark on this issue. I'm glad to see many states, including mine pushing to close loop holes legally...I just don't get how people can defend the need to abolish such new and important laws.

People pick up on every fad that comes along. I've got a ton of labs for adoption right now. Why? Marley and Me. All the idiot BYBs out there trying to make a buck ran out and grabbed 4 or 5 of them real fast and started breeding left and right. They come up with a black or chocolate and they can't sell them because they don't look like Marley. So they dump them in kill shelters in my area to be euthanized. I guess that's not the worse, because many breeders just outright kill them. Shoot them. Drown them. Electrocute them. Break their neck. Or dump them in the middle of nowhere at a few weeks old to die slowly.

Yep, people are wonderful.
