Well the whole story definitely squicks me out a bit; but what were the poor dogs to do? Yeah, I'd have a hard time not thinking about it if I were adopting them but I'd try real hard to put that picture out of my mind altogether. I agree they are not going to stage a repeat.
And ... . . I definitely don't think my Westie would starve either. Nope. Then the Yorkie would join in and . . well . . . let's not even go there. Ya do what ya have to do to survive.
What get's me is even if you were that sick / depressed (etc) that you would want to commit suicide, surely you would sort out your dogs first - even drop them off at a shelter..!

I would say that this is one of those things that if you haven't walked a mile in his shoes, you shouldn't judge. You don't know what the situation was and for someone to make that choice, things had to have been horrible for him. My recommendation would be to have some compassion.
Suffice it to say that this was a terrible situation for all and I am glad that the dogs found a loving home. A happy ending to a horrible story.
If I was the new owner, I'd be creeped out when they stared at me.
No kidding!
Would they be thinking hmmmmm I wonder how they would taste? Bwaaahaaaa
