Jeez, Tightwad, what's with the control issues? You must be a real joy at parties!
Discussions on a public forum go where they go, and that's part of the fun. I'm grateful to have learned some new things from the "off-topic" posts.
That said, I think I'll be avoiding your threads from now on.
He's like that everywhere. He obviously has zero use for normal conversational patterns, and only wants people to bow down and agree with his premise. Not expand on it, not give alternatives, and definitly don't disagree with him. There's obviously more than one reason for the "tight" part of his username...

There have been dozens of threads in this forum about telephone alternatives, and the same arguments have been made over and over again, and highjacking all threads into the same tired old pattern is NOT what makes forums fun. There is no need to start them all over again in a thread whose topic is a very, very specific aspect of business practices in a particular kind of telephony, in a subforum about business. Nothing "new" has been said in the off-topic posts.
Every time I boot up my computer, I sit there with my fingers crossed wondering if the desktop will come on. My internet modem has an expected life of 12-18 months. My household power goes out in storms and car crashes. My landlines keeps working and my phone is 20 years old. I've never called 911 in my life, but I can if I need to"
My computer has stayed on for 4 years straight now.. it only reboots to run updates and it does that once a month at 3 am and takes about 30 seconds. If your power goes out.. you can use your cell phone. How often does your power go out? Seriously? VOIP is where it's at. Your land line will be obsolete before you know it.
If I had to guess, I would say your are in your late 50's or 60's and are slowly losing your grasp on technology and trying your hardest to hang on to old times. It's ok, we all go through it.

I'd imagine you can get most VOIP to work during a power outrage with a simple back-up power supply even a basic one could run the modems, etc for hours.
Anyhow, the Verizon FIOS box has a built in battery that supports the "land line" for many hours when the power goes out. All the businesses around here have been essentially forced to switch to FIOS, Verizon doesn't want to support the old phone lines anymore.

Oh jesus christ take a break, you've taken up more space lecturing other people about being off topic than off topic posts, and you certainly aren't the authority on what is fun and what isn't.

You should hear his fist-shaking rants against GPS and its users -- almost invariably off-toic, hypocritically.

Great. You've sold me. Can you point me to a full service bundle which includes the Verizon FIOS box for less than the $20 a month I'm paying for landline?

I know nothing about VOIP stability, usage, or costs. That said, I am also aware of the rip-off of land-line services, but will continue to do so because of two specific instances:
(1) 9/11. During the day that this took place, cell phones were NOT working. If you wanted to let anyone know you were alright, it was land-line phones only. As a matter of fact, there were LINES of people standing waiting for their turns to use the payphones on the streets.
(2) During the blizzard last year in the NY/NJ region, a majority of areas were without electricity for well over a week. During that time, it was actually the good old rotary phones which were the only ones working since they required no electricity to perform.
One-off situations can be mocked and dismissed for what they are, but the fact is that they DO occur.

Huh? I wasn't trying to sale you anything, but rather pointing out that once they lay fibers in an area they don't want to support the old infrastructure anymore.
Regardless, FIOS is only cost effective if you get multiple services bundled together. But its only $80~$90 for TV, internet and a phone line with unlimited domestic calling all of which are going to be superior to the alternatives. If you purchased these separately it would be much more.
