i based my entire career on automation. i am a motor control specialist in the area of factory automation.

ever since by first career as a drummer got pushed into obsolesence by dj's in the 1970's i had to creatively always stay ahead of the curve by shifting gears a bit and reinventing what i know so it applys to other areas.

i thought long and hard about what i could do with no skills other than drumming since i had zero skills at anything else and no money..

i ran through every job in my head and although i knew nothing about it i saw this guy on tv from apex technical school advertising learn air conditioning and refrigeration.

i figured ,heck, people do not go into the sealed systems of commercial air conditiong and refrigeration units , i will do that.

i borrowed the money from the school with no clue how to pay it back.

well hated that work. everything was heavy or on a hot roof or in a 130 degree machine room. it was awful work to me.

so i learned more and more about big shopping mall climate control systems. eventually i got a job being head mall troubleshooter .

got a good education on the job about temperature and pressure controls, motor controls that control the speed of motors as well as learned about motors themselves and slid into factory automation as a control specialist and designed and sold motor control packages .

that is where i am retiring from in 6 months. never been out of work for more than 1 day in 40 years.

it is all about not staying static in what you do.

most people float like a cork in water to wherever they end up with no control over their job or career.

those who take control and think outside the box can always adapt.

I do not know if most people follow this pattern but certainly a great many do. Those who float like a cork usually do not like the outcome. It seems they always have excuses and point the blame at the government, their boss, and whoever else they can find to blame. Conspiracy theories help transfer blame from their behavior to hidden forces beyond their control. When I hear these excuses, I cannot help but think of the "L" word.
