Indeed. Or the fact that "with lunch and gas it's over $100 a visit."

Give me a break. If you have so much resentment of the fact that visiting your grandkids costs you 0.01% of your annual income, don't visit them. Or bring your lunch. Roundtrip gas from Queens to New Jersey in a reasonably fuel efficient car is probably about 5 bucks right now.

give you a break ?

my comment in no way says i resent going there . it is only an example of what every day life in an area like the tristate area can run . What i resent is the ridiculous tolls which are an insane amount .

30 dollars in tolls for two bridges is absurd especially when the tolls are not even for the bridge's cost . we have 3 kids in 3 different directions and all involve these tolls .

So the expenses of living a middle class life style here can be very expensive compared to other places and that is my point with the 100 dollars.
5 bucks in gas ? Ha ha ha it is 80 miles back and forth in a jeep sahara.

But thats my choice in vehicles.

Anywhere in the tristate area will have daily life costing quite a bit and this is why you can't compare what constitutes a middle class lifestyle . each area takes a very different amount and none of it has to do with median incomes ,

as i mentioned above 69k qualify's a family of 4 for a nyc low income project .

I can pass a drug test, credit check, and I have a degree and skills. Yet I am underemployed/barely hanging on because I am over 45 years old.
I have been begging for interviews and all I get is no here in atlanta.

Funny how the decline of the average American citizen's prosperity began right about the time we went to "open door" immigration in 1965.

Flood the workforce with people desperate for jobs, and watch paychecks plummet and benefits disappear....

Median individual income in real (2014) dollars, from https://www.census.gov/hhes/www/inco...orical/people/

1975 $22,715
1980 $21,738
1985 $23,106
1990 $25,277
1995 $25,896
2000 $29,578
2005 $29,488
2010 $28,422
2014 $28,757

Median has risen over time in the United States, peaking in 2007 at $30,401. This correlation you are trying to draws with immigration policies doesn't exist, since the plummeting income you claim doesn't exist.

Same goes for others who recall some golden era of paychecl prosperity that existing before immigration, gold standard, these kids today, (insert rant topic here) the median income data just doesn't support it.

You are absolutely correct, but the average has risen much faster than the median, and since people compare themselves to other people, the ones at the median feel (somewhat reasonably) that they are being left behind.

The moral of the story is to make damned sure you're above the median.

It's the law in Oakland CA and the minimum wage goes from $12.25 to 12.55 Jan 1.

Other areas are considering $15 and SF requires some type of Health Insurance or more money.

The Bay has regions with 3% unemployment right now and the easy way to see more people are working is try to drive anywhere... some freeways are clogged all day now..

can't say why . don't know you . but i can tell you here in the tristate area there are bidding wars starting for employees .

I can tell you this based on what i see in the tristate area .

the great recession let company's clean out all the marginal employees .

no company ever lets its best of breed go unless they are closing the doors . even then if you are the best of breed at what you do competitors will grab you before your body hits the streets .

so what you have is a bunch of 2nd level and 3rd level employees's out of work . most of that 2nd level is hired by now .

what we see daily coming in for jobs are what is left . to them it is their age , their race , their looks etc or the fact there is just no jobs out there .

but they are wrong , there are lots of jobs but not for them .

most employees like to think of themselves as that coveted best of breed but the reality is many are that 3rd tier and are unemployed for reasons other then what they think .

So what should they do?

If they knew the truth, what would they do? Would it be not pretty?
