Exactly. And pretty soon those that are funding all those folks sitting around just taking will stop doing the work. Then what?

Working would need to be better than living in poverty don't you think?

We don't have to speculate too much. There are countries where the social benefits are so good and the pay rates are so compressed that there is very little monetary incentive to work, and yet people do. And their living standard is as good as ours.

If this were true, then there would be little poverty. No?

Those other countries don't have centuries of learned dependence, and have a strong sense of national pride. They are also much smaller, I'm assuming. Not a fair comparison at all.

The US has centuries of learned dependence and weak national pride? You need to get out more.

I get out plenty. And I see that there are many who do NOT think working is better than living in poverty. They have learned that by gaming the system they are able to sit home and do nothing.

And yes, weak national pride. When a friend is told by her daughter that she needs to remove the American flag sticker on her car before she drives it on a college campus, lest her car get vandalized, I'd say we have a serious lack of national pride. I have plenty, and am mocked for it.

I presume you're aware that unless you're disabled, there is a 5 year cap on cash welfare payments? A single person who isn't disabled can get about $40.00 in food stamps and Medicaid. We have a single mother problem that needs to be addressed but it's not like I can quit work, go on welfare, and never have to work again for the rest of my life. There's pretty much no way I'd qualify for Section 8 housing since that all goes to those single mothers and there isn't enough for anyone else who isn't disabled.

If enough people really did stay home (which I highly doubt), working conditions and wages in this country would improve by leaps and bounds. This is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Every one should at least be given a basic subsistence wage regardless of their present condition. We live in a world where jobs are hard to get, that alone should require a better safety net than what this country gives us.

Just give the people who actually want to work a little bit more than those people who don't want to work and really don't give a s**t.

Jobs are very difficult to get indeed.
