How many lives have been saved by the EPA since Nixon launched it? How about OSHA?
The idea is to cut back on over bloated agencies and budgets, not to eliminate them and the regulations entirely. Have you ever dealt with these organizations? We had OSHA come into one of the places where I worked. It was clear they were mostly interested in passing out big fines that had nothing to do with worker safety. There is no way to confront the federal government or to get due process. I saw one very large company try. That was the end of their business operation. Pending any legal process, the Feds shut off all business and effectively closed them down. The bureaucrats got credit for enforcement but no one benefited.
A lot of enforcement agencies while having a core mission of safety, security, and equal opportunity, are more interested in passing out violations of any kind, even the most trivial kind to the point it is spin and the employers do not want to bother spending legal costs to fight it, so these agencies have a long list of violations to add to their yearly budget justification they present to congress. Additionally, many people build their careers based upon how many of these violations they get.
Cut the military budget in half. We will stil have the largest, most expensive and advanced military in the world. It is crazy how much we spend on defense. Cut it in half.
Also, federally legalize and tax marijuana. The tax revenue earned will be in the billions and we can cut back on the DEA and other law enforcement budgets, saving even more! Leaving the classification of marijuana up to the DEA needs alsoto be changed. They will never change it from a class 1 drug (same as cocaine and heroine) because that’s where half their budget comes from; enforcing marijuana laws.

Ever hear of Love Canal or the Superfund sites? OSHA? Countless workplaces have been made safer. What about guardrails and harnesses for construction work?

Yes, and there are those who hunt Bigfoot as well. Generations of politicians have come to Washington pledging to stamp out the proverbial waste, fraud, and abuse. There is precious little of it left these days.

The closest I've come is in reviewing IG reports for committees with oversight. That wasn't recently though. I've been retired for a while now after all.

I'm surprised that you expect anyone to buy into any of that.
Actually, with posters claiming that the government is more efficient than the private sector, this thread should get moved to the Insanity Forum.
The government often is more efficient than the private sector, but the prior point was over waste, fraud, abuse, and egregious mismanagement that would never be tolerated in the federal sector. Things like sexism, racism, nepotism, and so forth. Those and the damage done by blind pursuit of profit are things that simply aren't found with such frequency on the other side of the fence.
