“What businesses were headquartered in your city in the 1950's, 60's, or 70's and is now gone?”
A better question would be: What businesses were headquartered in your city in the 1950s, 60s, or 70s and are now gone?
All of them except the Red Front and Verdiles. Cluetts, Fitzerald Brewery, Collins Lumber, Hendricks Brewery, Marshall Ray, Burden Iron Works. That's all I can remember because I was only a teen.
Bates Mill in Lewiston Maine. Up in smoke in the early 70's now just a shell of parts of the building. Also Knapp Shoe whose HQ was in MA but the main facility was Lewiston Maine.
Fleur Corp. used to have a huge complex in Orange County by the I-5 fwy. Lots more left SoCal but that's all that comes to mind right now........lots of strawberry fields near there too!
Grumman used to be out on the east end of Long Island, from the 50’s to the 90’s. According to Wikipedia they employed 23,000 at the peak. They designed and built everything from WWII style prop planes to the Apollo Lunar Module. When I was a teenager I would see F-14’s flying low over the bay.
Montgomery Ward, Zenith Electronics, National Foods, Central Telephone, Admiral, Commuity discount, W F Hall printing; come to mind.
