We have lots of 500sq foot condos here, but they go for around 400K.

If you want one built, buy some land and build your small house.

Buy your land, work and pay it off, and then when you can afford to build, proceed with Stage 2.

In Seattle they raised minimum wage quite a bit. Instead of enabling workers to get off government assistance and improve their lives, employers found that the workers instead wanted their hours cut because now they made too much money and were losing the freebies. That didn't work out so well.
No, I never inferred anyone was dense. What I said was that the thread was about people earning 2 - 2.5 times the minimum wage not being able to afford rent, I think that's worthy of discussion. It's obvious that if you make $7.25 an hour you can't afford rent and in most parts of the country it probably wouldn't even cover a single room.

I don't have solutions, but I think it's an important topic. I live in Sacramento where rents for a 1 bedroom apartment have gone from $600-$700 a month 3 or 4 years ago to $1,000 - $1100. Virtually every landlord requires 3X income to even apply. That means that if you work 40 hours a week you need to make $20 an hour (41,600 annually) to afford a one bedroom apartment in a crummy part of town.

I don't know how it is elsewhere but there aren't many landlords here who would rent a one bedroom apartment to multiple tenants. It's a real problem, there are tons of people here who gross 40-45k a year, if rents keep going up where are they going to live? My real concern is that if rents go up 7-10% every year many of them will ultimately end up homeless and then we will have a real mess.

So solution is what?

Seizing all property from private landlords and letting the government run everything ?

Things would be so nice if we could just be more like Venezuela right ?

A simple 500 sq ft home can’t be built for cheap because of high land costs , unions, government regulations etc etc

They are building some homeless housing buildings in L.A and each unit costs $400,000 !

Nobody is going to give their land away for free and why should they ? A construction worker isn’t going to work for free , etc .
This is why housing costs so much .

If you don’t believe me ask a developer or builder to explain why housing costs so much especially in bigger cities .

Again this varies . You can buy condos for $30,000 or less in some cities yet in other cities that cheapest one might be say $300,000 . .

Want cheap housing ? Go to where the housing is cheap .

I hate greed. I hate entitlement. The rich are the ultimate entitled ones.

There is no "should" here. People get to do what they can afford. And if a person making minimum wage cant afford to live on their own, that's OK. They get to live with multiple people. Or under a bridge.

About 10 years ago I bought some condos in Houston that were very cheap .

Under $20,000 each .

I looked now and they’ve gone up but saw one in the same complex for under $50,000

Problem is people want cheap in high cost cities AND in the best area of course .

There is a saying .. “Champagne taste on a beer budget. “

Classic scarcity mindset . Read the link below and maybe you will realize that you have scarcity mindset .

“The scarcity mindset revolves around the idea that there simply isn’t enough to go around. There can be only one raise at work and if one person gets it, everyone else can’t have it. My paycheck only has a certain amount of money in it and if I don’t spend it now, it will “go away” – the “man” will take it. If I don’t party now when I’m young, I will never have the chance to party later.

Thus, the scarcity mindset always focuses on the extreme short term of every decision. What is the most fun option right now? What uses up the resources I have right now so that they can’t be taken away later?”
