I'm 48, worth $3.5 million, and I'm fed up with NYC. Where should I go? (company, paying)

For someone who is gay and wants to live in Utah, I'd stick to Salt Lake City/Park City and then maybe Moab if they really, really like mountain biking for almost all of their social and recreational options. The 75% or higher LDS areas, not so much.
SLC is actually a pretty cool mid-sized metro in a number of ways but I couldn't do the air quality issues, which are getting to be as bad as anything you find in Southern California.
Heber/Midway is a cheap(er) alternative to Park City. It's on the back side of Deer Valley facing Mount Timpanogos .
St. George Utah Golf Condo for winter then a ranch in Heber Utah for all other seasons. Heber has access to world class fly fishing, snomobiling, skiing, ATV'ing and a great reservoir/lake for boating. St. George or Mesquite would be a great landing sport for 3 months during the dead of winter.
St. George gets cold in Winter. They do get some snow.
No one place is perfect. I would pick one place that meets the major criteria except weather, and travel extensively during the months with poor weather. Alternatively, alternate between two or three locations, such as Portugal (or Costa Rica), Nevada, and New Hampshire - just pick the best one for your permanent tax home.
Coastal Oregon and perhaps somewhere in the southwest (NV, AZ and NM) might be his best options.
Are the "boondocks" of California also pricey?
The "boondocks" of California can be pricy for housing if near the coast and income tax is 9.3% of the amount above $56K (CA treats income and capital gains the same). OR and NM have similar high taxes and not really nice weather year round.
How gay friendly is N Alabama? The retiree is a gay man who wants a social life.
Probably not very, while N Alabama is fairly nice, it is very conservative - with NASA Space flight center and the Army's Redstone Arsenal there. I would suggest New Orleans as better location - fairly inexpensive, cosmopolitan, LOTS to do, gay friendly and fairly good weather 9 months out of the year.
Why do you not take a longer road trip? 3.5 mio may seem like an immense amount but unless it produces you may run into some snags in your senior years.
