We have waited 5 weeks for a driveway seal guy, coming tomorrow, and after accepting a quote have waited
since late April to have our house painted. The only people that you can get right away are the $20/hour day workers at the Home Depot parking lot, and I suppose they are demanding more now. At least they are still there.

Can we please stop this inaccurate narrative? Perhaps employers should be more competitive with the Gig-working economy. People have had time to find other streams of income. I know tons of people who when laid off, decided to work for themselves.

I'm pretty sure the people out of work knew that unemployment would end and would have gotten a job before that happens.

Or do you think these people are so lazy that they don't even care if their benefits end?
ITA. I hear all the time about supposedly lazy people who won't take every crap ass job at every low salary that is posted. How about raising wages and increasing benefits a bit? Competition works more than one way. Its just that this time businesses have to compete for workers.

We have another higher position in our department open now that pays $80-90k to start and are getting plenty of applicants. I think it's just those places paying less than about $25/hour that are suffering. They are mostly restaurants, but I have seen "Now Hiring" signs also at several supermarkets and retailers, gas stations and oil change places. All are in the $15-20 pay range, and no one wants to work for that any more. I don't know how Walmart thinks they are going to hire 20,000 people for the holiday season.

see your kind of jobs draw people away from retail jobs, stocking shelves, waiting on dinner, shredding on lettuce.
if they have decent skills, aspiration, can add, whip the computer and motivated, why not apply for a better job?We can find plumbers who work for a company and they are expensive/and there may be a waiting list.

Reports already showing that ending extended unemployment isn’t bringing anyone back. Workers have moved on. You treat people like ****, lay them off, you reap what you sow.

You can save yourself a lot of money by simply doing some of these menial entry level jobs yourself. If you are too busy with the admin work then your "small" business is booming, and should have enough to attract workers with more pay.

Where are you noticing local businesses being understaffed? I have not seen any of this.

Brick and Mortar was shutting down long before Covid-19, and the stimulus enacted.

Where be these restaurants that cant stay open? Perhaps with all the commercial vacancies driving rent down, a lot of these cooks, and waitstaff probably decided they can make more for themselves, and do better by opening up their own joints. But I sure the owners who they used to work for can cook, clean, and serve all by themselves. So if the food is any good, these restaurants ought to be fine.

exactly right.

Walmart, Target, Costco, Amazon, are all drawing away low-wage workers and have higher pay, better benefits, better schedules. If you are truly good at food service and really want to do it for a living, you are going to move up to the better restaurant, better hotel, whatever.

This is about businesses at the bottom of the capital system getting their productivity redistributed to those at the top. Unfortunately that means really huge corporations are now becoming really huge employers. Making them really, really powerful. This has been happening for years.

My girlfriend came into an inheritance recently. She's been trying to get a plumber out to get an estimate on plumbing the basement in rural western NC for months now. You can't even get someone to come out and give you an estimate.
Its the busy season for construction. Ida just left a path of DE-STRUCT-SHONE in its path

A lot of these fast food places are going freshly prepared. That takes longer, then prepping everything in advance and letting it sit.

If that is the going rate, that is what you need to pay or overpay to steal contractors away from others. Construction is one of those price elastic services. Because when someone needs construction, they usually need it badly. It is almost like a hostage situation or going to the hospital.

If you get home late at night, and forget keys, and are locked out, call the locksmith. They will charge a lot.

A shortage of employees means a job surplus, which means people can find better jobs and get better pay.

I think that's better than the usual situation, where there's a job shortage and people can't get decent jobs.

It might be bad news for employers and Wall Street, but it's great news for the working class.

Are we talking about wanted ads posted on brick and mortar businesses? Those have been shutting down for years, why will someone answer that ad when they could be out of business in like 4 months?

If these are for hire ads on the internet like on Indeed, or Monster, you must take with grain of salt. Those almost never amount to anything. Back prior to and during the GFC, those websites were just collecting info on people, and sending them to bogus interviews.
