That's true; I only paid attention to the NY one because that's where we live.
However, when Amazon acts as an internet storefront for affiliated vendors (such as Target, or Vitamin Shoppe, for example) they have ALWAYS charged tax on items bought via that method. In other words if I ordered something on Amazon and the item description says "Ships from and sold by Target" then NY tax was always charged because Target has stores here. That's nothing new. The new law applies now to items that are "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" , which before this recent law went into effect, were tax-free to New York buyers.
There was never any issue with Amazon not charging tax on merchandise they sold on behalf of affiliated brick-and-mortar vendors who had even just one location in a purchaser's state. That was always done.
